Need help ASAP for a "Welfare Debate!"?

Okay so I know very little about the welfare subject in America. Im in a debate and my team is "for welfare," (I guess meaning tht it does work and is good lol). This is the harder side to defend, but the statement I was given is, "private welfare versus government welfare." Im supposed to look up stuff about this, but what?!? I REALLY need help! Can someone show me a good website or even better, tell me about this and how I can fight back?

I think you're going to have to go to ACORN with this one. And do us all a favor; would you get it on video? This should be a hoot...

Put out these questions on Pilgrims: Does anyone here believe there would be an America had:

    1) The Pilgrims been given subsidies for clothing and shelter..

    2) The government had restrictive laws on hunting fire arms.

    3) The Pilgrims were given housing support and or free housing.

    4) The Pilgrims were given given unemployment insurance for one or even two years.

    5) The Pilgrims were restricted by the EPA on building or forest harvesting.

    6) The government forced all Pilgrims to pay a government insurance fee no matter the ability to pay or the right not to.

    7) Do you think the Pilgrims would have moved west, over-come harsh elements and farmed for themselves, had the government been there with food stamps, WIKS, welfare and free food?

If you answered no to any of these questions, I rest my case......why? because the Pilgrims would still be sitting in Massachusetts waiting for the next government hand-out.
