Question about blue laws and Christianity?
I live in South Carolina. Here we have these blue laws where you cannot purchase alcohol on Sundays and the majority of the store (grocery stores are exempt) don't open until 1:30 and close early at 6:00. I do believe that these laws have been changed in some parts of the state, but my question is, why are they in place to begin with? Obviously it has something to do with Sundays beng a "holy day", right? I have always wondered this since I was small. What's the deal with the alcohol on Sunday? Really, you can just stock up on Saturday if ya want! And the store opening hours are just aggravating to say the least. Thanks in advance for your response.
I'm not complaining, just asking a question. Don't tell me to move if I don't like it. My 68 y/o mother has MS. I bought the house next door to her and I will stay here and take care of her for the rest of her LIFE. Thank you again for answering my question.

I'm with you. The "Blue Laws" are a pain in the butt (I was born and raised in Texas, and they have them, too). When I was a kid, lots of stores weren't open at all on Sunday. It's all about Christianity, and not doing work on what THEY considered to be the Sabbath; the alcohol bans in particular (which most other southern states have too) get into the notion of temperence, or refraining from drinking with the idea that drinking is inherently sinful; the notion that one might actually <gasp!!!> DRINK on Sunday made the Christians crazy, and lawmakers had to bow to pressure.
When grocery stores and such first started opening on Sundays (sometime in the early 70s, if memory serves), you'd think that the entire state had been doomed to hell, to listen to the Baptists talk ;-) Even now, grocery stores in many Texas cities can't sell any alcohol on Sunday, and are limited to beer and wine the rest of the week.
Another remnant of the blue laws in Texas is that car dealerships are not allowed to be open all seven days of the week - go figure.
By the way - the name "Blue Law" comes from the fact that they were originally printed on blue paper :-)

These blue laws were enacted by well meaning religious people who, nonetheless, don't understand Christianity. You cannot regulate human behaviour. A person will do what they want, despite such laws that are designed to limit and regulate people. As you point out, all one need do is "stock up" the day before if they want to drink on a Sunday morning, for example.
Sorry to hear about your mother's condition. Luckily she has you to help her. God's blessings upon you.

Separation of Church and State is touched upon contained in the first change. And definite, I do trust it must be a contravention of the announcement of Independence to implement "blue guidelines." I not in any respect opt to work out the separation of church and state disappear. which could in basic terms deliver us one step in the route of a communist usa. (definite, I said it). for my section, the added guidelines the authorities passes, the in the route of two accessible outcomes we grow to be. both the authorities will take too a lot capacity, ensuing in anarchy, or the authorities receives too a lot capacity, and grow to be extra of a communism. In both case, the authorities needs to take a step lower back and enable the human beings govern their personal lives for a replace. What we desire, is a President who isn't a political candidate, yet extremely a real man or woman. (definite, which ability a negative man or woman who has had to artwork for each penny he has ever earned.) i trust someone who can help the authorities enable the human beings somewhat extra man or woman freedoms, will stumble on a happier usa than what we've at present.

I feel sorry for Jewish people who live there, because they don't do anything on Saturday, and then can't buy groceries or stuff on Sunday because the stores are closed.

The idea of blue laws were to keep the sabbath day holy. If somebody wants to work their way around the law that's their business. But, it was for the betterment of society.
