How do I loosen this stupid nut?

I'm trying loosen the nut that is holding my shower head in place but it won't move at all. I used an adjustable spanner (wrench) and pliers; neither worked. I can't make them grip tightly enough to be able to apply torque, and they just slide on the nut when I try to turn it. How do I get this stupid thing loose?

Spray and spray WD40. Then wait a few minutes to try again. When you make progress spray again, start all over. If you work this a little at a time it will come loose. Oh yeah, if you don't have WD40, try mayo!

If you are having troubles gripping the pipe I would suggest a Vice Grips. If possible use two. one on the nut and one on the pipe. The Vice that is on the pipe is not to be turned it is just there to give you a better handle on the pipe so you don't hurt the shower wall where the pipe comes out of the wall. Be very careful not to put the Vice Grips on to tight or you change crushing the pipe. That will cost you a lot of extra work.

pipe wrench will do it, but will mar the finish. they bite tighter the harder you pull on them.
