Is Gateway still a viable pleyer in the computer market?
I m planning to buy a new laptop to replace my 10 year old Dell desktop. I am looking at a Gateway laptop-4GB memory 500 GB hard drive. It is a good price compared to the main brands.
Will Gateway be around to honor any warranty and is their quality up there? I know they used to be a major competitor of Dell years ago.

With just-in-time manufacturing in Mexico and China and an overall deterioriation in the quality of electronic components, laptops are pretty much all the same these days.
I owned a Gateway refurb laptop for a few years and, while it wasn't BAD, it wasn't built very well either. The hinges both broke at about the 3-year mark and it wouldn't stay upright on its own, not to mention the hard drive crapped out.
Don't look at the brand name as such. Look at the unit itself and see how it's built...assuming you can. See if there are intelligent reviews online for it (use the model number). In other words, you're probably not going to find your answer here...you're going to have to do a little bit of additional homework.

Acer bought out Gateway a few years ago. Both lines are reasonable quality and have decent sized marketing and support behind them.
