Could the Reformers been wrong?

I am a youth pastor and constantly evaluate my own theology and doctrine. I look into the ways we have always done things and see many of it not consistent with the Bible. The question I pose is simple. What if the Reformers only were part of the solution and how do we continue this quest?

This is the dilema that Martin Luther found himself in. He noticed a lot of discrepancies between what the Bible said and the traditional teachings of the clergy. He sought to change the Catholic church from within but met with opposition. When reformation from within failed, he agonized over leaving the church to establish his own. He decided to strike out on his own because the Catholics' teachings were blatantly flawed and couldn't be repaired.

I guess you have to ask yourself how bad these differences are. Is it something blatantly against what the word of God teaches or is it simply a church tradition which doesn't matter much? Does it violate basic Bible principals like the humanity or divinity of Christ? Is it morally offensive or biased against a certain group within the church?

Remember that the whole theme of the Bible from cover to cover is Jesus Christ. Is Jesus and his death on the cross emphasized in sermons and teachings?

It's a hard question to answer without specifics. Email me if you'd like. God bless you as you contemplate these things. I commend you for checking the facts and meditating about it. It shows that you love God and his Word and care about the people you teach.
