Why do Republicans claim to support states rights and complain about the Feds?

Didn't Republicans lead the US in a civil war against people who claimed that states had the authority to decide matters? How do the Republicans now claim to be the party that upholds that principle when they put this nation through that bloodshed?

After the civil rights bill was signed in the late 1960's racist southerners switched from the Democratic party to the republican party.

Yes. And Democrats fought against the Civil Rights Act even though they claim to care about minorities.

Just a history lesson: The Civil War was about preserving the Union.

Are you serious, or trying to get a laugh?

The North was about preserving the Union (freeing the slaves wasn't a rallying cry until at least 1863, almost two years after hostilities began). States rights or federal power were NOT issues to them.

The South was about states rights and repelling a foreign army.

You can preserve the Union and still recognize states rights; you CAN NOT preserve the Union with an expanding Federal power.

Perhaps you need to go take a refresher course in US history at a local school. The Civil War was fought over, among other things, slavery and the states' choice to continue using slaves and indentured servants, as in the south seceded because they wanted it to be up to the states to determine their own slavery laws, and thought it shouldn't be a federal law, which we all know is not the case.

  • Because the union became the Democrats, and the confederates became the Republicans. in other word they changed parties.

Maybe you should have stayed awake during your US history class.

Don't you just love liberals and their ignorance of history?

Why don't you ask a question where you show a little more smarts.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

I see you are admitting the democrats were the slavers.
