Jews believe that their messiah is still to come. They do not believe Jesus was the messiah because:
1. they believe that Jesus didn't fulfil the messianic prophecies, eg, the messiah was supposed to:
A. Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28).
B. Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6).
C. Usher in an era of world peace, and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease. As it says: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore." (Isaiah 2:4)
D. Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite humanity as one. (Zechariah 14:9).
Christians would say that Jesus will fulfill these in the second coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies the first time round, and that there is no 'second coming.'
2. Jews believe that God will reveal himself to a whole nation, not just through the one man (Jesus.) Also, some Jews think that the popularity of christianity is God's way of spreading the world of the Torah-and that the messianic age is upon us because recently there have been a lot of people converting to Judaism. Also, the idea of '3 in 1' (the trinity) contradicts the idea that God is united and 'one.'
These websites are really good at explaining the concept of the Jewish messiah:

What is the Messiah supposed to accomplish?
As it says: "God will be King over all the world -- on that day, God will be One and His Name will be One" (Zechariah 14:9).
The historical fact is that Jesus fulfilled none of these messianic prophecies.
xtians counter that Jesus will fulfill these in the Second Coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies outright, and no concept of a second coming exists.
2) JESUS DID NOT EMBODY THE PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS OF MESSIAH
A. MESSIAH AS PROPHET
Jesus was not a prophet. Prophecy can only exist in Israel when the land is inhabited by a majority of world Jewry. During the time of Ezra (circa 300 BCE), when the majority of Jews refused to move from Babylon to Israel, prophecy ended upon the death of the last prophets -- Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
Jesus appeared on the scene approximately 350 years after prophecy had ended.
B. DESCENDANT OF DAVID
The Messiah must be a descendant on his father's side from King David (see Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 11:1). According to the xian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin birth, he had no father -- and thus could not have possibly fulfilled the messianic requirement of being descended on his father's side from King David!C. TORAH C. OBSERVANCE
The Messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah observance. The Torah states that all mitzvot remain binding forever, and anyone coming to change the Torah is immediately identified as a false prophet. (Deut. 13:1-4)
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states that its commandments are no longer applicable. (see John 1:45 and 9:16, Acts 3:22 and 7:37)
There is no historical person as jesus. Even the name is less than 400 years old in the xian bibles. It is interesting to note that the oldest of Greek manuscripts do not give a name to the central character of Paul's writings. xrstos was used, meaning anointed.
xtianity is ever changing, xrstos became Latinised to christ, the early church taught it was blasphemy to direct prayers to christ as late as 280. 325 the Nicean Creed declares christ to be the very god of gods 381 Council of Constantinople invents "Three persons in 1 god." Emperor Theodosius - Describing god as a committee of 3 co-equal persons decreed not believing in the trinity was punishable by death in 388 !
xtianity continued to change in some places the Latin christ was given the name I Zeus in the earliest English versions. This is one of the many reasons the church gave for removing the nt from the hands of the common people. As the church believed the people would link their central character with the Greek father of gods. I Zeus was later changed to the less known name of the Greek Goddess of healing, IESous. In 1630 the name "jesus" first appears, and more recently yet another change has begun. As of December 31, 2009 the Roman catholic church has begun to use the name "allah" in referring to jesus.
How can this be ? The author always has the right to edit their own book.xtianity was formed by Rome for 2 reasons:1.) to unite the Roman Empire that was threatening to divide again due to religious wars within its borders2.) in an attempt to gain new territory for the Roman Empire using the common people rather than military effort

Furthermore, this verse tell us that if God were a human being, he would be in need of repentance because all human beings sin at some point in their lives. Finally, this verse also tells us that if God were a human being, then he would make promises, but not keep them:
God is the same, God does not lie, and God is God and Human Beings are Human Beings, and God does not become a Human Being, and Human Beings do not become gods.
This means that basic to the faith of the Jewish People, is the distinction between God and man, a distinction which is not found in Christianity. This confusion, the mixing of Man with gods, was common in the ancient pagan world.

J.P. gave a good description of the messiah for the Jews (Christians don't have the right or authority to tell the Jews who their messiah should be). The messiah is not that important in the Tanakh (OT) or in Judaism. But it is the Tanakh (word of God) that tells us who a messiah is and not later added-on allegorical tales told by mainly non-Jews who have invented their ideas of a messiah by mis-understanding the Hebrew of the Tanakh, selecting only a few selected verses, taking most of those verses out-of-context and/or quoting only a portion of the sentences, in order to either a promote a syncretistic belief system or philosophy or to satirize/parody Judaism, or to present a more Judaized version of Roman pagan religions.

The Jews believe that the Messiah will come some day and make the world all peaceful and stuff.
They do not believe that Jesus is the Messiah. They do not believe that the Messiah will be the son of God. They do not believe that the Messiah will open the gates to heaven, or that you should worship the Messiah.
They believe that the Messiah will be a decent human being who'll bring about peace. Nothing more.

The following passages in the Jewish scriptures are
the ones that Jews consider to be messianic in nature
or relating to the end of days:
* Isaiah 2, 11, 42; 59:20
* Jeremiah 23, 30, 33; 48:47; 49:39
* Ezekiel 38:16
* Hosea 3:4-3:5
* Micah 4
* Zephaniah 3:9
* Zechariah 14:9
* Daniel 10:14
What Will the Mashiach Do?
The mashiach will bring about the political and spiritual redemption of the Jewish people by bringing them back to Israel and restoring Jerusalem (Isaiah 11:11-12; Jeremiah 23:8; 30:3; Hosea 3:4-5). He will establish a government in Israel that will be the center of all world government, both for Jews and gentiles (Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:10; 42:1). He will rebuild the Temple and re-establish its worship (Jeremiah 33:18). He will restore the religious court system of Israel and establish Jewish law as the law of the land (Jeremiah 33:15).
Daniel tells us:“I kept on beholding in the visions of the night, and, see there! with the clouds of the heavens someone like a son of man happened to be coming; and to the Ancient of Days he gained access, and they brought him up close even before that One. And to him there were given rulership and dignity and kingdom, that the peoples, national groups and languages should all serve even him. His rulership is an indefinitely lasting rulership that will not pass away, and his kingdom one that will not be brought to ruin. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All other things have been created through him and for him. Also, he is before all other things and by means of him all other things were made to exist, and he is the head of the body, the congregation. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that he might become the one who is first in all things; because God saw good for all fullness to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile again to himself all other things by making peace through the blood he shed, no matter whether they are the things upon the earth or the things in the heavens.And upon his outer garment, even upon his thigh, he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

The messiah will be a great leader who will work with God and Israel to usher in an era of universal peace on earth. The messiah will NOT be divine. The messiah does not have anything at all to do with *salvation.*
Messianic Era (Chabad Lubavitch)
In the Messianic Era, the Divine plan for the world will be fully realized. There will be universal peace, prosperity, goodness and knowledge of God. The coming Moshiach will not cause a break with the past and the beginning of something entirely new. On the contrary, it is the culmination and crowning stroke of all our efforts toward a world of peace and consummate holiness.
Moshiach will free the Jewish People from all servitude to foreign nations, rebuild the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and gather all the Jews of the entire world to Israel. Peace and prosperity will be universal and all the nations of the world will serve the one God. Moshiach will reveal Godliness in every facet of the Creation. He will elevate each of us from our respective limitations and open our eyes to the Godliness that is the inner reality of our life.
We will still have our family, friends and possessions. However, they will be more wholesome and meaningful because we will see their true value-their Divine purpose.
.
From "The Book of Words," by Lawrence Kushner
Tradition wisely warns against "forcing the hand of the Messiah." On the other hand, imagining how much better things could be than they are now only guarantees despair.
Sometimes "the best" is the enemy of "the good." If you allow yourself to measure existence against a perfect standard, life will certainly be miserable. Things, by definition, could always be better than they are now. On the other hand, succumbing to the way things are now is to cease dreaming. The balance, perhaps, is to accept the way things are because, like it or not, for better or for worse, that is literally the only way things are. They, of course, can be different, but only later. To worry about "later" is to miss "now." Remember, one of us may be the Messiah. That possibility shouldn't, but nevertheless does, affect how we treat one another.

In Kabbalah, it is not only God who judges us. As we bid farewell to the world, we are shown a film that contains scenes of our entire lives. We are witnesses to every moment of our days on Earth as they pass before us with incredible rapidity. And as we watch our own story unfold, there are times when we cringe with embarrassment; others when we smile with glee. Our past moral lapses cause us to shudder in pain; our victories over our evil inclinations provide us with a keen sense of spiritual triumph. It is then that we realize in retrospect that we alone are the greatest judges of our own lives. What happens after death is that we gain the wisdom to evaluate our own life by the standards of Heaven -- because we have finally glimpsed an eternal perspective.
What is Hell? Remember when you were in eighth grade and something utterly embarrassing happened? The shame you felt and how you just wanted the ground to open up so you could disappear. That is Hell. It is the deepest realization that our life (or part of it) has been squandered, which creates a deep regret and shame in our soul.
The good news is that God -- in His infinite kindness – established this as a cleansing process, where after one year (or less), all the negativity has been forever washed away.

There is a belief that a potential Moshiach is born every generation. That person will be a descendant of King David, son of Jessie. The person will be a great leader, teacher, and example of what a Jew should be.
Many great people have been thought to be the potential Moshiach of their generation. Some were truly worthy, but the rest of us were not ready. If I knew exactly who it was, I would be a prophet - but since the gates of prophecy are closed until the time of Moshiach - I can't possibly know.
For more details, and opinions, search Moshiach in your browser. Just remember - two Jews equals three or more opinions.

* The Moshiach will be a man of this world, an observant Jew with "fear of God" (Isaiah 11:2)
*****In other words - this must all be accomplished in a human lifetime*****
* Evil and tyranny will not be able to stand before his leadership (Isaiah 11:4)

Reasons Jesus wasn’t the Jewish Messiah:
* divine birth/divinity - (the Jewish Messiah will be human – G-d cannot become human – Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 44:6, Hosea 11:9, Ezekiel 28:2, Numbers 23:19) - strike
* performing miracles - (JM won't perform miracles) - strike
* taking on the sins of others - (no one can take on the sins of others – Deuteronomy 24:16, Exodus 32:30-35, Ezekiel 18:1-4; 20-24; 26-27) - strike
* breaking Sabbath - strike (JM will be observant) - strike
* sacrificed/rising from the dead - (G-d rejects human sacrifice and blood sacrifice is NOT an absolute requirement – Deuteronomy 12:30-31, Jeremiah 19:4-6, Psalm 106:37-38, Ezekiel 16:20, Leviticus 5:11-13, Jonah 3:10, Leviticus 17, Leviticus 5:11-13, Numbers 16:47, Numbers 31:50, Isaiah 6:6-7, Jeremiah 7:22-23, Psalm 51:16-17) - strike
* prophecies unfilled - (JM will accomplish them in one life time) - strike
* being worshiped - Jews worship G-d and only G-d – strike and OUT
Geneological errors in Christianity:
1. The Messiah is born of two human parents, as we said. But Jesus, according to Christian theology, was born of a union between a Human woman and God, rather than two HUMAN parents, as was Hercules, and Dionysis, as well as many other pagan gods.
2. The Messiah can trace his lineage through his human biological father, back to King David (Isaiah 11:1,10; Jeremiah 23:5; Ezekiel 34:23-24; 37:21-28; Jeremiah 30:7-10; 33:14-16; and Hosea 3:4-5). But Jesus's lineage cannot go through his human father, according to Christian theology, as Jesus's father was not Joseph the husband of Mary. According to Christian theology, Jesus's father was God.
3. The Messiah traces his lineage only through King Solomon (II Samuel 7:12-17; I Chronicles 22:9-10). But according to Luke 3:31, Jesus was a descendant of Nathan, another son of King David, and not a descendant of King David through King Solomon.
4. The Messiah cannot trace his lineage through Jehoiakim, Jeconiah, or Shealtiel, because this royal line was cursed (I Chronicles 3:15-17; Jeremiah 22:18,30). But according to both Matthew 1:11-12 and Luke 3:27, Jesus was a descendant of Shealtiel.
