Recycling and caps on PET bottles?

I ran into a discussion about PET bottles recycling. I was told that the cap (and also that little ring left on the bottle after you open it) is not made from the same materials as the bottle itself (PET). So the question is, should I take out the cap (and probably the ring) when I recycle the bottle?

Update:

Kim,

That makes it more confusing is the management of our apartment complex told me to put everything recyclable in one big blue plastic bag. I was told the recycling facilities will sort them out. I kind of wonder how in the world they would separate the cap from the bottle if I don't do it for them first.

Our local council asks us to remove the tops you describe.

At first I thought it was because it was a different kind of plastic, but subsequently found out why.

It's because if you leave them on, when the bottle is crushed between heavy metal rollers, if the top is on the bottle resists crushing, then bursts suddenly causing the rollers to bang together resulting in damage to the rollers. If they are crushed with no cap on, this does not happen.

Think about it, how many people cut off the little ring before the bottle is recycled.

Yeah, that's what I've also been told. I guess it's bad to mix different types of plastics. We have to take our recycling in, so we just separate it as we throw in the different items, and they have a separate box just for plastic caps. Same thing with glass jars like peanut jars that have the small ring of plastic around the neck of the jar. I just cut it off so it doesn't mix in with the glass.

Yeah so the bottles crush easier, if the lids are screwed on tight thet can't be crushed and also to ensure they are empty. If you can you should rinse things to. I save all my things and rinse them in the dirty dish water rather than wasting more water to rinse them!
