2006 Chevy Trailblazer cutting problems when idling please only experienced mechanics please?

I have a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer w/ 4.2 liter engine (4x4 if that matters). OK for starters I am pretty good mechanic just not with these newer vehicles, so please talk to me like someone who knows what they are doing I did work at Ford for almost 10 years , in parts helping the mechanics so I do know what you will be talking about.

OK, so the problem I am having is that when the Trailblazer has warmed up ( not all the time ) it will start missing , spitting , and sometimes it will die. I know that it DOES NOT have a serviceable fuel filter, I have replaced the plugs and cleaned the EGR valve and throttle body and the were nasty . I thought I had the problem fixed after I done all this it was running great , running better than before , then last week after about 6 weeks of no problems it has started again but it has gotten worse it will die almost every time and it does it more often than before. I am about ready to go and get some Sea Foam pull off the brake booster vacuum hose rev it to 3000 rpm and stick the hose in the sea foam and let it clean everything out. Also it does always start back up but their will be one day that it won't. Now unless one of you good GM mechanics have any ideas that I can try or know what the problem is, my pregnant wife is driving the vehicle and I have gone back to school and am about 2 hours away, I am at at my wits end on what this could be, I don't have the money to take it to GM so they can just throw parts at it to see what fixes it.

Any help from actual mechanics that have work in a shop ( no shade tree mechanics please) would be great thanks in advance, also if I left anything please leave a message and I will add any info needed. you can email me if you can really help idleford79@yahoo.com

Update:

I don't mean to say that all shade trees don't know what they are doing, I'm just hoping to weed out any teenagers who think they know it all and the people who shouldn't be working on vehicles. I asked this question a few months ago and I got a lot of stupid people answering that didn't even know how to pop a hood. If you have an real idea of what it might be please let me know.

Update 2:

Also I forgot to mention that the check engine light came on yesterday, first time it has done this.

Update 3:

it has 80,000 miles on it and I've only had since June '09 it was a rental most of its life according to carfax and it does not have any kind of smoke coming out at anytime

Update 4:

it does have a fuel filter in tank, but it does not have a serviceable one

I'd check fuel pressure and definitely pull the code(s) since you said the check engine light has come on. The code will show you what general direction of diagnosis to head to without as you say" throwing parts at it". It very well maybe injector/ fuel pressure related and as Motorhead also stated 02 sensor(s) are also a very good possibility. The mileage on the engine and how well it's been maintained over the years can also lead to possible clues. You can e-mail me if you'd like and I'll try to assist you if I can. Good luck and hope this helps.

    2006 Chevy Trailblazer Problems

  • 1 decade ago

I am shocked there is no fuel filter on the 2006 Trailblazer. There is on a 2005. Fuel injectors can not survive without one.

But getting back to your problem, since it is not constantly bad, it is not likely something permanently bad. That probably leaves out the coolant, air temperature, and air mass sensors.

While cam position sensor, coil, etc., can be intermittent, that is not likely temperature sensitive.

So my first guess would be the oxygen sensor. I believe you got into a feedback loop from something like moisture causing a plug to misfire, that carboned up the oxygen sensor, which then is causing the fuel system to try leaning out the mixture.

It would help is you told us the mileage has gotten better or worse, if there is any noticeable exhaust, what the fuel pressure is, if you had the OBD codes read, if you hear an air hiss when you open the gas cap, etc.?

My second guess is probably something with the fuel, like either the purge vent valve, the fuel pump, pressure regulator, etc., but there is no need to guess if we were told the fuel pressure.

If it is too intermittent, you could consider rigging a semi-permanent fuel pressure gauge using a cheap oil pressure gauge.

My grandmother just bought a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer as well and she is having many problems with it too .. the windows wont roll up once she has rolled them down .. she took it to the company and they said that they are doing a recall on some of them because of something wrong with the fuse box ... so i would check it out and ask the company where you bought it.
