Do you think the country as a whole is more Conservative or liberal minded?

Polls have shown consistently for years that over all, the USA is a center/right country. They don't like swift change, but slow development.

I don't think the number is as high as you cite, but we are not a modern liberal type country. President Carter served one term, and President Clinton had to move to the center and work with a Republican Congress to achieve what he did.

The entire country has shifted hard right in the past 40 years. If you look at the supreme court every justice nominated has been slightly right of the one being replaced. John Paul Stevens was considered moderate when nominated now he is considered a flaming liberal where his positions really haven't shifted.

What does being conservative mean - socially or fiscally - the supposed fiscal conservative GOP took a surplus and created the largest deficit we have ever seen

the small government conservatives created the largest expansion of government we have seen in recent history with the Department of Homeland Security

the keep government out of our business conservatives passed the Patriot Act which takes away tons of freedoms and creates government intervention into our lives

or socially conservative which I take to mean from the platform don't kill any unborn baby by abortion but its ok that they can't eat or go to school or have clothes if they are born to a welfare mom because whats mine is mine and the government can't take it to help some kid because this money is mine and you can't have it for taxes to help the less fortunate.

It is definitely a regional type of thing. If that poll were taken in NY City or LA I'm sure the numbers would be decidedly liberal, in Atlanta or Dallas probably decidedly conservative. Overall it has been my experience, I travel a lot for work, that the country as a whole is probably more center left but not by a huge difference, maybe 55 to 45.

It is likely that a poll suggests that 60% of those polled would call themselves conservative. It is more likely that the truth is more centrist but at the time they were being asked and by the way they were asked, those polled preferred conservative. Most polls are rather unreliable because they depend on individual perceptions and rarely ask a clear question.

Maybe on a personal level, but not on matters of national fiscal responsibility. I think people have a tendency to confuse their beliefs relative to personal spending vs. government spending when responding to polls like that. Many self proclaimed conservatives would fight to the death to keep Social Security, Medicare and any other federal social program or war they deemed to be worthy of deficit spending for... even if they don't believe in outrageous deficit spending in their personal lives.

I would agree. Of course the tens of millions of listeners who make Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and Savage the highest rated talk shows in the country also lend some credibility to the claim.

my guess is that most americans are in the middle. socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

its hard to know there are tons of issues which could sway votes, so if being a conservative is anti gay marriage, that would make CA conservative because they rejected prop 8, but i highly doubt people would call CA conservative
