It's not an environmental disaster because it IS the environment.
It's a catastrophe for humans but not for nature.

Im worried about the animals in the effected area and the effect that the ash is having on them. but yes i am looking at the eruption as a environmental disaster.

But are you implying something more serious or long-term? Please elaborate.
To put this in perspective, here is the amount of CO2 released by the volcano, compared to the CO2 saved by grounding all those airplanes for a day:

You are one of the few!
The only reason Iceland is there is due to volcanic land accretion!
To Iceland it is ...wow Iceland is a little bigger and less of it is covered by a glacier which does them no good at all. The amount of water vapor relaesed is still relatively small!

Volcanic ash can be very rich in minerals, that is why a lot of people live near volcanoes, the rich soil gives great harvests.
