Has the US has gotten better or worse since 1950?

What is your religion or faith (if any) and do you feel the United States has gotten better or worse since 1950?

The reason I ask is that in the early to mid 1950s, "In God We Trust" was added to all currency (previously, it was only on coins), "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Day of Prayer was created. If you are a theist and you believe the US has gotten worse since then, what does that say about the effectiveness of these mottos and prayers?

Update:

No Chance Without Jesus, you can still pray in school. The schools just can't lead the prayers.

I am sure that you are aware that there are other Gods besides the one Christians believe in. With that being said, what God exactly is that we are being led to trust? The Bible says along with the Quran that during the end times, the antichrist will be on our money and in our Churches.

We are living in a time of darkness, a time when death can strike us at any moment. The world isn't like it used to be, as many countries hold weapons of mass destruction which can be triggered at any time. Our Government feeds us more and more lies everyday, and our media brainwashes millions of people everyday as well.

"Monstrous things are happening in the land...

    The Prophets prophesy falsely...

The priest teach whatever they please...

And my people love it! But when the end comes, what will you do?"

    Jeremiah 5:30-31

If you actually open your eyes and look around the world for answers in the right places rather than the media you will find a lot interesting things.

"The last hour will not come before thirty Dajjals come forth. Each claiming to be apostle of Allah"

    Sunan Abu Dawood

"The hour will come when people begin to compete with others in the construction of taller buildings"

    Sahih Bukhari

"Smog will appear over the cities because of the evil they are doing"

    Sahih Muslim

I believe that the answer is neither. Evil has never gotten worse or better, it simply changes. In the 1950's a lot more people went to church. Many weren't Christians, it was just part of life. In our time people are more honest with themselves (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). We never were a Christian nation. Those phrases on money and the pledge simply make statements that should never have existed. We have a freedom of religion. State and religion need to stay distant. If you disagree then look at Iran. I believe that evil has simply evolved as culture evolves. I write these things not from an Atheist perspective nor one who supports the ACLU. I am a youth pastor proud of the freedom we have in America.

A lot has change and it hasn't just been with economics. People have more greed now, and less patience, there have been major social changes and not for the better. It is more dangerous for older people and few care about anyone except themselves and instant gratification. Do the 50's look better to me - Sure, but then I was 5-10 years old and life wasn't so bad. We lived on a farm, I went barefoot all summer, except on Sunday to church, played in the creek and rode bikes and the neighbors horses. Worked in the garden and helped can (both of which I loved) and never locked our door. Not it wasn't in the Mid-West it was in Northern California.

I believe the US has gotten "worse" since the 1950s. I attribute this to the politicians. And all of those politicians have claimed religious affiliations with one church or another. Am I saying its the fault of religion? No. But, we have yet to have an openly atheist President, so I'd like to see how that works out before I draw stronger conclusions.

Much worse. In the past 40 years this country has murdered around 40 million unborn bablies. In the bible a baby is considered innocent blood and brings God's judgment. This country has become much more accepting of the sin of homosexuality. Christians should be accepting of the sinner and try to show the sinner to Jesus but shouldn't accept or condone the sin. This country has become a lot more accepting to many other forms of sin.

i have no religion. i have to answer your question with a simple yes. but not because of "in god we trust" (though it should still be removed) it has gotten worse because of human nature. people feel a need to drag everyone down to make themselves feel better. i would say some things about the government, but "big brother" is watching and listening and monitoring everything that we say and do.

Nothing to do with god, but it has become worse, of course. As for the 'In God We Trust' thing, more and more people, apart from the chronically credulous, have begun to realise that god cannot be trusted. Mainly because there is no such thing as god. God was very useful (and multiple gods even more so) back when humans were largely ignorant of their world. We are no longer ignorant, and we no longer need god. God is an obfuscation, and we need to look inwards at ourselves, and be less harmful and destructive, to ourselves and our fellows.

Worse, because if the fact of drugs, greed, poverty, and declining schools. Stamping silly mottos on our money certainly did not help!

In 1965 we told school kids that God was not important anymore. The slide began then and has been unabated into the moral abyss since then
