Depo shot and...overweight. BUT...?

Back in June 2009, I got a depo shot after I had a miscarriage, just to prevent that scare again. Well, I never went back for a second shot, or third, or anything. It "expired" in Sept., but, it's April 2010, and since then, I've been wanting to get pregnant.

With all failed luck, I didn't think about the depo shot until recently.

I heard stories that some people got pregnant 3 months off the depo shot, but...its' been a good... 6 or 7 months now since mine, and it got me thinking...

Is it because I am overweight that it could take the depo shot so long to get out of my system? Yes, there are other factors of being unhealthy (my doctor tells me I am pretty healthy for a chunky gal though), but I'm not. Does weight affect the way the depo shot leaves the body, or stays in the body?

Hmmm?

I've had depo and want to conceive also. I've been really scared lately because most of the things I've read about the subject say that it usually takes women LONGER to conceive afterward---like even up to 2 years after the last shot. So I REALLY hope you're right when you say some women get pregnant 3 months afterward, because that's not what I've been hearing.

If you are overweight, it can be challenging to get pregnant anyway, regardless of past birth control used. This is because in overweight women, excessive estrogen is often produced, which is what is in the pill. Excessive estrogen prevents ovulation. Have you been having sporadic periods? If so, you might not be ovulating regularly. At least you have been pregnant before, so it doesn't seem impossible for you.

Hopefully we'll both get pregnant within a reasonable amount of time despite the mistake of taking DEPO! I'll never recommend that to anyone!

  • Mine expired in August and I'm not overweight (I have a little bit of chubbiness but not considered "overweight", 5'2" 136 lbs) and I am still not pregnant. It's been 8 months for me.

It can take up to 2 years to conceive after depo. Most women will get pregnant within a year though.

Has your periods returned yet? If so, have you tested to see if you've resumed ovulating? You can get periods without ovulating, they're called annovulatory cycles and are not "true" periods. I have had a regular cycle since October (every 26-27 days, but this past AF came at 29 days) but I have not tested yet to see if I am ovulating. I plan to buy an Ovulation Predictor Kit Friday (OPK).

    Good luck & baby dust!

It can take up to a year for the depo shot to leave your body.

It just depends. I am on the depo shot, and my doctor told me that when I want to start trying to have another baby, ways to get it to leave your body faster are to drink more water, workout (so you sweat more), and get in a steam room or sauna. It will help the chemicals leave your body faster. I am not over weight, I am 5' 2" and I completely spaced out about my shot, and I didnt go back to get it until 2 months after I was supposed to, and it was fine, it was still in my body. If you want it out of your body faster, try that.

I dook the depo shot for over 5 years and then stopped taking it and started trying. I took me about 2 years to get pregnant. I wouldn't worry about it. You are probably just really stressed about trying, so I would just stop trying and it will happen. I had a miscarriage in the end of Aug and they did a D & C in Sept my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since Nov and nothing, but I know it will happen, so just relax!

Chances are, the problem is unrelated to the Depo Shot. Birth control hormones can be absorbed by fat, causing an imbalance, but you have to be pretty overweight for that to actually be the problem. For some women though, losing 10% of body weight can kickstart ovulation if that is your problem. Don't assume that you are the problem. Men actually produce less sperm than they once did due primarily to poor diet.

i replace into on Depo for 5 years. when I first began it, I had fairly short sessions (2 or 3 days) that have been very easy. After the third shot, i finished bleeding altogether. i desperate to alter to the pill, and the 1st couple of cycles have been heavy, and the cramps have been terrible. with reference to the time i replace into due for the subsequent shot (if I have been going to get it) I have been given pregnant. My husband and that i on no account used condoms or spermicide on a similar time as i replace into on the shot for the time of the 5 years. I have faith the shot greater so than the pill. i began on the shot back when I had my son, I fairly have been having easy sessions that final for some days, in basic terms like previously. i've got not had any problems with the shot, yet it is in basic terms me.

Depo really is horrible to our bodies. LOTS of women who were on it have problems conceiving, some even have PCOS. Weight IMO won't affect it.

well ive heard that overweight women are more likely to carry twins (so they clearly can get pregnant) , so it cant be because of your weight?
