Can anyone help with a tax debt question?
After working as a subcontractor for several years, I accumulated quite a large tax debt that I have since been trying to ignore. Obviously, these things only get worse with time, I understand that. My question is, does anyone have any familiarity with the tax relief companies you see advertised on TV? My guess is that I owe in the neighborhood of 30,000 dollars and earn around 25,000 a year. So if you have used these places, can you give me an idea of how they work and what I can expect them to be able to do for me? Do they need money up front? If so, how much? What else might they ask from me? Thanks in advance for your help.

The companies that advertise on cable TV are going to charge you somewhere between $3 & $4,000 up front for their services and will promise miracles. What you need to do is to show that IRS will be unable to collect the account in full and that you are offering as much as it can expect to extract from you. Depending on your individual situation the account may be classified as currently not collectible and IRS won't attempt to collect until your situation improves.

If you're looking for IRS Tax Debt Relief, I'd recommend Tax Advice Center (IRS Tax Settlement). You'll want tax relief from a company with verifiable credentials -- These guys have an A+ rating with the BBB, are D&B Listed, and belong to their city's Chamber of Commerce. What I liked about this tax relief company is that they get all your details up front and review your case for free and decide if they can help you or not. If they can't, they won't take you on as a client, and you really don't lose anything. If they do take you on, you'll have Tax Attorneys, CPAs, and even ex-IRS agents working on your case. Here's some of their tax solutions:

Don't go to one of those places you see on TV - if they do anything at all for you, or even if they don't, their price will be ridiculous.
The only way to get your debt knocked down, and you might well qualify since there's probably no way you can pay it all, is by filing something called an Offer in Compromise with the IRS. Most of those are NOT accepted.
Try going to a local CPA or even better, Enrolled Agent, with experience in filing OIC's. They'll do the same thing, have as good or better success rate, and will cost a fraction of the places you see on TV,

Hello, those places are a rip-off. The only way the IRS will take less than what is owed is if you are literally broke, you have no assets, no income and no prospects. Contact a CPA , they will help you file your old returns and work out a payment plan. Do it now, when the IRS makes the first move, your in for a rough ride. Good luck my friend.

Rule 1) If they advertise on TV and Radio, avoid them. They are a huge ripoff. They charge thousands of dollars, promise you the world and then do next to nothing.
Rule 2) Never forget Rule 1.
Rule 3) Call a CPA or EA in your local area and explain the situation.

Be Careful they will take anyone as a client to get your fee. You have to pay a fee upfront to any one that is helping you. If the IRS isn't getting paid the person helping you will not get paid.
I happen to be an Enrolled Agent which means I am enrolled to practice before the IRS. We do this type of work and do give a 30 minute free consultation.
You can contact me at my office if you are interested.

yes, you will spend several thousand dollars for them to do the work
you can attempt an OFFER in Compromise that is available at www.irs.gov
these are very hard to get approved and usually a small percent are so
when you are young and with potential of future earnings, have some assets etc. IRS is not likely to approve any
your best is to discuss this with the collection officer and make arrangements to pay it off installment plan, you will save lots of money, and definitely be in better standing with IRS
