Witholding salary from employee?

I'm curious to know if an employer has the right to withhold pay from an employee as a disciplinary act, without any legal consequence. I'm in BC, Canada.

Update:

To get into more detail, the reason would be due to lates, 4 in 12 months. The employee did make up for the time that he missed, if that makes a difference.

Nope. You are entitled to your wages and your employer is not entitled to keep your wages as a penalty. Mind you, he could have just fired you instead. I suggest that you find another job asap and then file a complaint with the B.C. Ministry of Labor at http://www.gov.bc.ca/lbr/index.html and they will get your money back for you. Good luck and God bless.

It's possible, if the employer could make a case that the employee wasn't doing his job and therefore not upholding his end of the contract. Employment Law tends to be very poorly regulated and not even much of it there to begin with. If the employee was missing a lot of days without notice or even just his job so badly that it would count as not doing it, it's possible an employer could do this.

@pragmatism_rules: you are right. My manager was removed from his position due to his unprofessionalism, and due to a petition from the majority of those working under him.
