Generally speaking, I think the best remakes come from middle-of-the-road movies - those that weren't big hits, but also weren't major flops.
Why?
Great films are already great. There's no reason to remake them if they were done right the first time. And you run the risk of turning off audiences by messing with a beloved classic.
Major flops were usually flops because they were inherently flawed to begin with, usually by a bad concept and/or a bad story.
The trick is to look for a film which had a lot of potential, but which just wasn't done right. Perhaps one where the casting was weak, or one where the special effects of the time couldn't handle the demands of the story. The kind of movie you walk away from shaking your head and saying "That should have been a GREAT movie, but they blew it."
Take that same concept, do it right this time, and you can wind up with a great remake.

there is a remake of Red Dawn coming out this year (November)! I want to see it too because the kids actually look younger than the people they had in the original. Even though it doesnt really make sense that theyll be fighting the chinese it's still going to be interesting.
