Is there any adults out there with high functioning Autism?
My son is 8 years old and on the high functioning end of the Autism Spectrum. He is extremely intelligent, but has problems with social interaction (gets loud over excited and doesn't understand personal space etc) Will he be able to control this as he gets older and hold down a job and relationship? Any adults with first hand experience out there to help me?

No one here can accurately predict what your son will or will not be able to do by the time he is an adult. Are there people with HFA/Asperger's who are capable of keeping a job and/or having a long-term relationship? Yes. But there are others who can not. A lot will depend on what he learns in the next decade or more.
The higher the standards you set for him, the more likely it is that he'll be able to function fairly well in society. People tend to live up (or down) to others' expectations, so if you don't expect much of him, he likely won't get very far. However, he has a neurological difference, and it is possible that no matter what you do he won't be able to - it's hard enough for experts to make an accurate prognosis after seeing a kid, let alone some strangers on the internet who have never met your son.
Source(s): I'm 25yo. I've been married for 5 years (have had couples counseling multiple times though). I have a 2.75yo son. I've had a few jobs, but nothing longer than 3 months full time or so (I've never been fired, but I have quit jobs for various reasons). I've almost completed my bachelor's degree. I have had lots of problems over the years. I don't have an official diagnosis, but based on the diagnostic criteria I am certain I have Asperger's (besides, I've spent probably over a thousand hours reading about autistic spectrum disorders - it's been a special interest of mine the past 4 years or so). I was referred several times to psychologists for social problems as I was growing up, but back then nobody had heard of Asperger's - the psychs just didn't know what to do with me. - A LeftistLv 61 decade ago
Yes, go to speech tharepy. I took it from when i was 3-9 years old, and i got over the speech & reason imparment. Now i am a social person, i got over my autism (well, i do walk on my tip-toes at times, walking heel-toe his hard for me.), and i'm the top of my class.
Source(s): I had PDD, it's in the Autism specrtum.
