ENV3 versus BACKFLIP ... would you go with the LG product from Verizon or the Motorola product from AT&T ?

Different class of phones.

Backflip is considered a low-end Smartphone (a "rough" equivalent on Verizon is the Droid Eris, or the Moto Devour), while the enV3 / enV Touch are considered multimedia phones.

I had a LG enV (the original) for the full contract period. It is quite good, great full QWERTY keyboard, though a little bulky. enV3 solved most of that. But it is NOT a Smartphone, as it only speaks WAP, and not too many available programs to download that are any good.

Moto Backflip is a smartphone, as it runs Android, and there are over 50000 apps on Android market now (not all are any good, of course), and many are free. It also comes with MOTOBLUR, a customized interface that supposedly makes the whole thing easier to use.

Keep in mind that AT&T will probably stick you with $30 data plan in addition to the voice plan, whereas Verizon will probably stick you with $10 data plan as that's not a full smartphone.

EDIT: Correct, Backflip has a 5MP cam while enV3 is 3MP only. However, if you only share pics online, even 1MP cam is good enough.

The Backflip comes with built-in connectivity to Facebook, so you can issue updates all the time.

There not exactly the same category of phone. The Backflip is a late generation Android phone will the Env3 is a advanced feature phone. In that comparison the backflip wins hands down in every category but plan cost. If you looking at something similar on Verizon look at the Eris or the Incredible.
