That portion of the bill goes into effect 9/23/10 and stipulates that the insurance company must allow children to stay on their parents' policy when the policy renews after that date. If you don't know when your policy renews it is generally the month after open enrollment.

The insurance companies are currently working on this timeline. I have heard from some companies that they may allow children to stay on the policy prior to that date but nothing has been released yet. That is why the reps don't know anything.

You may want to look into getting a short term medical policy for him to tie him over until things are more certain.

New Jersey law is better than the Health Insurance Reform act, and has been for a few years. You can continue "dependent" coverage for your son, under the same terms you have received while he was in college, until his 30th birthday.

(It might cost you an additional 1 or 2 percent of his premium, and the age might have been changed to 31 recently.)

You need to talk to a rep who knows the New Jersey "Dependent to age 30" law. If you want to cite chapter and verse, the right phrase is:

At 22 you shouldn't have a curfew but since you're staying at home you should still follow the house rules. If that's your parents' policy that you quit making noise by 12, then you should follow that rule as long as you're living at home. She should make an exception if you get a job that keeps you out later than that.
