my daughter's backpack smells..how to get rid of it?
I asked this in cleaning as well, but seeing if any moms or dads had any suggestions.
My daughter's backpack smells, it kind of smells like a cat peed on it, but its not as strong as cat pee usually is, but it kind of smells musty as well. I know a cat did not pee on it, I'm just comparing the smell. I am not sure how the smell got there, the backpack is not even a year old. It is also only on the outside- not the inside. But I have sprayed it with Frebeeze ordor eliminating, it worked until it dried and then went back to smelling. How can I get rid of this smell??
I did not really want to buy her a new backpack if I could avoid it- it is a nice backpack and considering it was like $30 I was hoping to get more than 7 months out of it.
Yes, it says not to put in a washing machine but to take a damp cloth to it if needed.
I'm going to try some of the suggestions. And no I did not send her to school with it today. Hopefully something will work.

Is there a tag on the inside that gives washing instructions? It can probably be machine washed on gentle cycle and air dried. Is it possible that the rank smell is coming from some lunch or liquid that may have leaked into or on the backpack? My son has a lunch bag that attaches to the backpack with a caribiner and by the end of the year that thing stinks!

Do you still have the tag attached that tells you the cleaning instructions? If so, follow them. If not what I would do is fill a large bucket or utility sink with water and dish soap. Scrub any obvious stains and then let the bag soak for an hour. Drip dry as best you can and then set out to air dry. That should do it!

Well have you tried washing it on a hot wash? Air dry it out on the line and see if that makes any different?
If not it looks like you may just have to cut your loses and purchase a new one.

You can throw it in the washing machine (with soap and hang to dry) or soak it in a bucket of hot water and vinegar.

Throw out the backpack.
We buy a new one every year. They just get trashed. If Febreeze didn't do it, you're fighting a losing battle.
