Is it typical for a catalytic converter(sp) to clog in a 2001 vehicle?

Just bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and the c.converter is clogged and needed replaced. Is there something else that caused that or is it just likely age?

The converter shouldn't clog up, the exhaust may clog up as fibre glass is used to pack the silencer . The converter can fail if the vehicle has been running over rich or the engine is worn and pushing out lots of unburnt oil.
