How do I know when to pull weak lettuce plants?

I am growing lettuce in an indoor garden but so far all the plants seem week and many are lying in the soil (same for some of my tomato plants). Is there any chance they will strengthen and rise up, or should they be pulled? I have never grown plants before so I'm not sure. Thanks!

Update:

Well obviously I know about sunlight. They are in the sun at all possible moments.

,once they go woody , tall and seedy, pull them, they also need to be grown fast , so plenty of nitrogen ,such as blood and bone
