You will get dozens of different answers, from Microsoft OS, Linux and even Network storage.
You have to decide what the server is to be used for. If just sharing files, some network storage may be ok. You can build your own NAS server with FreeNAS:
or purchase some NAS device at your local computer shop.
If planning on putting other things on the server, like forums, or other services (mysql, Ventrilo, etc.), then you have to choose between Linux based servers (free), or buy some Microsoft server software. Do not use regular MS desktop software, it has limitations.
For linux, you can check out:

For Microsoft, contact your nearest MS sales... (yes, MS would be overkill....)

Hi Petey,
Since you are already running two Vista computer on the network, why not go with another Vista computer, or Windows 7? As long as you choose to stick with a Windows OS, this will tell you how to set up your network - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Networ...
