Replacing Roofing over Tar and Gravel?

My present home has a Tar and Gravel Roof.. which I plan on re-doing.. but haven't decided on Metal, Shingles, Rolled Roofing, or a New Tar and Gravel. If I were to do the Metal or the Shingles.. I realize I would have to scrape all that old gravel off.. I think the Metal would be cheaper and easier.. any suggestions ?

Update:

Oh.. it is a 'Low Slope Roof' by the way.. I doubt 4 on 12.. 1200sq.ft. Bungalow..

As long as you have a pitched roof you have all these options. Metal will last a lifetime if done correctly. Shingles are 10-20 years depending on quality of shingles. Not sure about rolled roofing but it doesn't look as nice for sure. Tar and Gravel definitely won't last as long as most other options. I scraped one roof of tar and gravel and replaced with shingles. It was a tough job but it cured all the leaks I had and the roof is still holding up after more than 20 years.

I had Shingles for the first time a few weeks ago. I am normally in good health and haven't had any other health challenges before, so it came as a surprise.

Shingles is probably the most painful thing I have ever encountered. I went to the doctor, and he gave me some prescription drugs to take that was suposed to help, but didn't.

My wife found the Fast Shingles Cure ebook online and bought it for me, I am very lucky to have such a wonderful woman in my life. We followed the book, did what it said, and it delivered what it promised. Finally my Shingles rash is over... I feel truly blessed and thankful.

it seems to me if your roof is already bowing in, I would NOT put more weight on it with tar/gravel I would go with the membrane for the weight issue if nothing else... hope this helps

you can tear off the existing roof and replace with a 30 year dimensional if you have enough pitch at least a 4/12 is recommended for shingle if you thinking standing seam metal your talking 2x the price of a shingle roof if the roof is flat you can go with a rubber or epdm roof

re roofing with shingle cost per square foot $2.50 to $3.25

re roofing with rubber cost per square foot $3.10 to $5.5

standing seam metal cost per square foot $4.5 to $6.50

or you could scrape off the gravel and apply a aluminum coating for about $2.10 to 3.5 per square foot
