I have lived in Prescott, Arizona for the past 11 years and I love it here. Prescott has a population of about 35,000. No matter where you live in Prescott, you are about 15-20 minutes away from any given part of the rest of town. Prescott has a very nice small town charm with many small, independent businesses, yet also has the well-known corporate businesses such as Target, Wal-Mart, etc. We have 3 lakes for fishing, boating, and kayaking, an abundance of National Forest areas, and bike/hiking trails as well as camp grounds are everywhere. Having a 12 year old son, you would have plenty of places to explore. We have 4 very distinct seasons, with snow (not a huge amount) beautiful autumns, and blooming trees in the spring. Downtown Prescott, known for its rich history, small shops, and county courthouse, has many events hosted there throughout the year such as music events and art shows. Keep in mind, Prescott is more upper-central Arizona, so it's not like the typical "desert dry wasteland" mentality. Phoenix is about 100 miles south, yet couldn't be further from it scenically speaking. Northern Arizona is gorgeous, with places like Sedona (famous for its one of a kind red rocks) and Flagstaff (looks just like Colorado with forests and heavy snow in the winter).
contrary to what the other poster said, Arizona is not humid at all. Prescott has little rainfall and snow is never much of a problem, with usually about 10 snowy days a year, yet it's still green wherever you look. the hottest it gets in the summer is high 80's just for July, and the coldest is in the 30's.

Lulu obviously has never been to Arizona. The state is extremely diverse in its geography and what it has to offer. I would think you'd need to be near a job. Putting that obvious need aside, if you want to live out a ways from the city, consider Queen Creek, Flagstaff, or Pinetop/Lakeside.
All of those have a small town feeling yet have many amenities to offer. My suggestions offer three very different parts of the state. Queen Creek is an outer suburb of the Phoenix area. Flagstaff is in the northwest part of the state and offers many outdoor activities including a ski area and NAU is there. Pinetop/Lakeside is located in the White Mountains in the northeatern part of Arizona. It is near a ski area also and many outdoor activities - smaller community than Flagstaff. Flagstaff and Pinetop/Lakeside offer all 4 seasons and cooler temperatures than the Phoenix area.

I love life in Arizona. If you move here know that you will be in one of the most conservative state in the union. Look at the immigration bill we passed and the Constitutional Carry Bill we passed. That one if your of age and can legally buy a gun come mid July anyone can carry a concealed gun with no permit. You always could open carry without a permit now you can conceal. Bless you Jan you have my vote. If you like that type of freedom I'm sure AZ would be fine. If you don't like freedom like that best stay put
