My cat has a strip of fur missing?

My cat is over a year old now and she is on Frontline monthly.

A few months ago, I noticed my cat missing a lot of fur towards the base of her tail. It seems very 'uniform' and it is not red, nor does she have any changes in personality. It has begun to grow back, but she looks silly since it does not grow back evenly.

However, I examined it today and I saw what seemed to be "flea dirt". It looked like it was in the pores of her skin. It wasn't towards the tip of the tail, only towards the base. I am very worried, but I don't want to go to the vet because 1) it is very expensive and 2) her fur seems to be growing back without any irritations. Does anybody know what this might be or if it is any cause for alarm?

Also, I wanted to make note that we have gotten a few new puppies before I noticed her hair loss. She hates all dogs.

call your vet and ask them what it is tell them exactly what is going on. they will probably tell you as best they can over the phone. you can also bring a pet to most vets for like 30-50 dollars to get a basic check up and from that they should be able to tell you what it is. if its not just something silly or a patch of fur missing from a fight your cat got in or something.

Some cats pull their fur out and it can look pretty uniform. If she's got flea allergies, the itching alone would be enough cause to pull fur. If the base of the tail is all greasy, though, it's what's called stud tail, which blocks up the hair follicles and causes hot spots on the cat down there.

Check that the flea dirt really is flea dirt and not regular dirt from outside. On a damp paper towel rub some of the dirt in, if it's flea poop it'll get reddish.

I know this sounds funny, but cats get stress like humans , so the puppys could be causing stress and often when they are stress they lose hair like humans. But it could be fleas, or maybe that cat got scratched by something=)
