I feel so sad. Today no pumping, did you go through this?

My son hasn't been wanting the boob during the day for the last month, so I have decided that I would no longer pump while at work anymore. I went from three times a day to two and then one. All weekend he wanted it but when we got to the chair would get antsy and get up. I decided that I didn't need to do the once a day pump anymore either and today feel so sad. I want to hold onto that since I know he is getting bigger, (just turned one on April 6th). Did you go through this when you decided to stop, or your little one did? I still nurse in the morning at 5 am and then again before bed, but that's it. I am just wondering how long before that is gone too. I am leaving it up to him, but it makes me sad.

Thanks for listening :)

It is sad when your child weans. It's the end of an era, and a sign that he's growing up (sort of,he's only one!) He will probably continue the morning and night feeds for quite awhile, as long as you are still happy nursing him then don't rush him to fully wean. My son quit on me cold turkey at 9 months, he was always fussy nurser, and once he got a bottle that was it, he never looked back. It hurt like heck!!

Breast milk is soooo important for developement, so even if he will not nurse with you, continue to pump so that you can feed your own milk to him in bottles or sippy cups. Your breast milk, believe it or not, changes as your child gets older (it has to do with hormones I guess) to ensure that your child is getting the appropriate nutrition from you. It is normal and completely healthy to continue giving him your own milk up to age 3, 4, 5, and even 6. People get really controversial about it, but its healthy, its a normal part of life, and your breast milk even changes over this period of time to suit your childs needs. so even if he will not nurse, you should still try to feed it to him any other way that you can. Formula is a last resort , and I hope you will not have to go there, but you do what you can to raise your child :)

It's totally common for babies over a year to start self weaning. It's part of the process and yes, for some moms, it's a bit sad.

Have you been to the website called kellymoms.com? It has really good resources and tips for helping moms cope or extend their nursing. Try visiting there.
