I have 2 mastiffs that make a strange coughing sound?

This doesn't always happen and when it first occurred I took the one to the vet thinking something was in his throat, there wasn't anything and of course he didn't do it when he was there. Then my other mastiff started doing it so I took her to the vet and they check her for heart worm and she was negative. I also have a Jack Russel who shows no sign of coughing. All dogs eat very well, drink water and "do their business" outside. There is no weight lose and they are currently up to date on all their shots. Could it just be allergies?

Update:

But wouldn't it be strange that they both are coughing? They listened to their hearts and nothing sounded wrong.

Dog allergies don't usually manifest themselves as coughing. Your vet has ruled out heartworm, but what about congenital heart issues? Congestive heart failure often presents as coughing in the early stages and mastiffs are prone to heart issues.
