Is it OK to put a copyright sign on something that I have made without liscenceing it with the feds?

so, pretend i've just made a website from scratch, or something completely my own, can I say (C) copyright My Name 2010, where (C) is the copywrite sign?I haven't liscenced the work or anything.

By the way, no any other sites like Creative Commons?

/ Yes you can do that. If you do not go forth with your copywrite, then no harm done. It's like a warning sign to others - not to copy your work otherwise you will take them to court for infringement.

Now, of course if someone copies your work without your permission and you didn't copywrite your work, then you can't sue them for infringement.

Also, if someone copies your work and then they get the work copywrited, they can sue you for copywrite infringement of "their" (because they 'legally stole' it from you) work.

The original expression becomes protected by copyright as soon as it is in tangible form. So, once an original expression exists in a tangible form, that expression is protected by copyright. You do not even have to put the © symbol if you don't want to.

If you want to claim monetary damages if someone infringes your copyright, you should register it. Otherwise, you can compel someone to remove your copyrighted work by exercising your copyright protection afforded by the Berne Convention.

I think it is ok to do that, and it protects your rights.

But to be sure, you should check the U.S. Copyright Office's website (www.copyright.gov). They have a lot of really easy to understand materials on there for the average joe, and even some stuff for teachers and students.

Links to some easy to understand materials from the U.S. Copyright Office are below.

If you don't have a copyright, it isn't copyrighted.
