What exactly is nihilism?
In my experience, nihilists have tended to be more scientifically/philosophically motivated but less politically motivated than most atheists. I've personally found them to be more intelligent and introspective, but what exactly is their claim to reality?
Or is it just that there is none?
From what I've gathered, nihilists tend to be very deep individuals. They don't believe in life after death or any selfish theories that most people cling to, but they're not beyond speculation. They do experience LIFE as we all do. They just don't embellish the imagination as loosely as the rest of us. At least, that's how it seems to me.

They believe that life doesn't have a particular purpose. They just live and then die. They weren't 'made' to do anything.

Ironically, why would nihilists even bother asserting their beliefs? Nothing really matters right?
