I'm getting my blood drawn on Monday. Any tips/advice?

I'm fine with IVs thanks to my wisdom teeth removal in March, and I'm alright with vaccinations...but I've NEVER had my blood drawn before. I have a physical on Monday and they want to draw blood from me.

I've heard a few things about getting blood drawn, but they were all...mixed. Can anyone give me tips or advice before Monday? I'll be fasting 12 hours before my physical also, so water will be the only thing in my system.

Update:

I thought about donating blood, actually. But again, the whole needle phobia thing and all keeps coming to mind. Anyway, don't you have to be over 100 pounds to donate blood? Because I'm under 100.

No big deal. Treat it like an IV. Good luck.

It's not normal to put a hollow tube of plastic or metal into your body. But it isn't really a bad experience. Relax. Follow instructions. That's about it.

If you are able to, then consider regularly donating blood and/or plasma. Blood supplies are low across the country.

Again, relax. It's not that bad. There is some discomfort, but it isn't that bad.

    Edit:

You can look if you want to look. It's not scary. It's just a little uncomfortable. Then again, if you think that you might pass out, you can lie down. Be honest with the person drawing blood. They are professionals and will work with you. Ask questions if you have any.

I definitely agree with those who have already said it is no worse than an IV and to not watch and don't ask them to tell when they are about to do it. I have to have blood drawn frequently and that's what works for me. What I didn't know and am glad to have found out is that you should drink plenty of water, that makes good sense and I intend to do it before I go for the next 'withdrawal.

I'm sure you can ask. What is the harm in asking? The worst they can say is no and you are right if they say no they have most likely seen it before anyway. No need to worry, though, for all you know they will say yes to taking it from your upper right arm especially if you have a good vein there that is very visible.

Definitely drink lots of water the day before - it'll help assure that you're not dehydrated, which makes drawing blood more difficult (and therefore painful!).

Source(s): Personal experience - many many years of it.

Don't look at the needle, and tell them not to warn you before they put it in so you won't tense up. It's no worse than an IV.

    nothing to drawing blood

suggest you drink lots of plain water as your veins will be easier to find.

    good luck on the results

All I can say is that you should get plenty of rest afterward.
