Do i need a converter box for a new TV?
I have an old TV hooked up to the antenna on my house. Right now i have that running though the digital converter box. my converter box is now broken. i could go out and by a new box, but if i could just by a new tv, i would rather that. i understand that if i hook it up to the cable, i dont need the converter. but if i were to just hook up a new tv to the antenna, do i need the converter??

All flat panel TVs ship with digital tuners, there are two types. ATSC is what grabs digital and digital HD right out of the air they way you are doing it right now. Also, new TVs have a built in 'clear QAM' tuner, that's for unscrambled digital cable. So you are correct, you won't need a converter if you use the antenna.
If you get cable, you will get only a small number of stations because the cable companies have scrambled the majority of their stations. You'll only get a small number of digital channels, and the local networks in HD (must be carried by law unscrambled). So if you want all the channels, you need a box from the cable company.

All TVs that are now sold are Digital TVs, which means you would not need a converter box, because the digital that is required is built in. Only analog TVs require the digital box, to convert the digital signal to an analog signal, for the analog TV (if you are using over-the-air antennae).
Digital is different than HD. A TV can be digital, but not HD. Look at the box if you are unsure, it will tell you it is a digital TV, or it will say it has a built in digital receiver.

Are you in the U.S.? If so, any new TV that you buy will have an over-the-air digital tuner (ATSC), so you won't need any sort of converter to use your antenna.
If you connect the new TV to basic cable (no cable box), you'll receive your local broadcast stations and little else. One of the other answers implies that you'll get some digital channels with the set's QAM tuner, but that's not necessarily true. New TVs are required to have the ATSC tuner and also the analog tuner, but a QAM tuner is not a requirement and many budget-class TVs don't have one. That's mostly academic, though, because cable companies are rapidly moving their cable-only channels from both analog and unencrypted digital to their encrypted digital packages. You'll need a cable box to receive them.

in case you have already got cable, then no, you will no longer prefer a converter container. Cable is already digital, consequently, no conversion is needed. you will purely prefer a converter container if any of your TVs are hooked as much as an analog antenna, so the analog indicators would properly be converted to digital indicators. i desire this helped! :)

Look on the box or in the manual and see if it has a digital receiver. If it does you won't need the converter.
