Why do you want a server? It is best to rent a server from a company that has a server farm. You are guaranteed 99.9% up time and they are monitored 24/7. Also, the upload speed is going to be A LOT higher than any dsl, fiber or cable connection. A company that I rent mine from is Hostgator. They have great tech support and my server hasn't gone down yet (been almost a year). Also, the have live chat if you have any questions and don't want to sit on the phone.

Another resource is called www.webhostingtalk.com. This community keeps you up to date on hosting companies.

If you still want to do it yourself, go for it. I've got a small testing server at home that I store websites that I'm working on so my clients can view progress. My server at home is just an old tower that was just sitting around. AMD athlon with only 512mb RAM. I put ubuntu server OS on it and it does the job quite well. Here's a site that's on my server at home:

Here's my site located on my hostgator server:

    good luck!

Try before you buy. Either hostgator as someone else mentioned, or http://bocacom.net/

Keep in mind - if you get a server either bought or rented, you are responsible for everything from firewalls to viruses. You have to fix it or you have to pay to get it fixed.
