Confused about genetic testing (14 weeks pregnant)?

I'm currently a little over 14 weeks pregnant and at my last doctor's visit 2 weeks ago, my doctor informed me of all the different type of tests available ranging from down syndrome to other various genetic issues. She let me know that my blood work came back great, and also neither me or my partner have had any family history of genetic issues. I'm 26 and he is 27, this is our first child. Those of you who were or are in the same boat as me, which test(s) did you have done? my doctor is great but she just sort of laid it all out and i'm really confused about which tests are really necessary.....

Update:

so far my ultrasounds (2) have came back with good measurements and my dates have matched up. I don't want any risk involved with the invasive testing. Heartbeat was 160 each time i had an ultrasound. I'm worried because i'm a first time mom but i just don't think i need the extra testing. My doc did offer the blood testing between 15-20 weeks which would be at my next visit.

First you need to check with your insurance to make sure they'll cover this testing. Mine wasn't going to unless it came back positive for some kind of deformity (makes a lot of sense right?) and if I was to go ahead with it it would have cost me around $1000. Second, I feel that a lot of doctors these days push testing that is unnecessary. If there is no history of down syndrome for example and you're not at risk, which you're not because of your age, why spend this money to find out what you pretty much already know? And you need to think about if you want to know because if there is something wrong with the baby they'll ask you if you want to terminate the pregnancy. You'll also be able to find out if there's some sort of "defect" at your 20 week ultrasound. Nothing mental or such, but if the baby does have downs they'll be able to tell then. I personally turned down the testing for multiple reasons and am just hoping that if my baby does wind up with my psoriasis that she doesn't curse me like I curse my dad for passing it on.

Hi, like you, my doctor asked if I would like the same tests done. My blood work was came back perfect and the baby has been right one track. I opted to not have the testing because the truth is, the testing is 16-20 weeks or something they do it and for me, it made no difference. That and I was not worried about health issues because I am very healthy, I have two healthy boys, and a healthy fiance. The only tests I chose to do were the HIV test and all the other tests. I am 32 weeks today and my little girl is perfect not any concerns

With your age and test results there really is no need to do more, besides it would take either amniocentesis or chorionic villi sampling, both of which increase the risk of miscarriage and still birth. Not sure you want that risk when you are already really quite low risk.
