In Army Basic Training, are you allowed to use a Camelbak?
My friend is going to Basic Training this summer, and as a going away gift, I was thinking about getting him a Camelbak water bag. Would he be allowed to have and use this?

Don't bother. Anything he will need will be issued to him when he gets there.
HOWEVER, a Camelback could be used later on in his Army career, however once again its a pretty common issue item for deployment and field training, so perhaps you could look at getting him something else. Surefire flashlights are always nice but expensive.

when you first arrive at your first base. you will be given a speech on what is allowed and not. All of those items that are not allowed as in CELL PHONE and the specialty iron will be not allowed. you have 2 choices. Put them in an envelope to mail home or dispose of them. You will not have a need for that cell phone for the next 12 weeks so just leave that at home. Good Luck to you.

Honestly, I dunno much about Army Basic, but probably not.
At Basic you are ISSUED what you need and are allowed. USMC certainly doesn't allow Camelbak's to be brought in, at least not for OCS. They tell you what to bring and ship home or keep and destroy anything that isn't in the list.

I don't know if they're allowed now, but when I was in BCT and AIT we weren't allowed to have them. We had canteens. When I got to my unit, though, I wasn't issued a Camelbak, but I used one (it was "recommended").
