How do you deal with bi-polar disorder?
My boyfriend is bi-polar. (Honestly, diagnosed and everything. So please no making fun.) I love being with him and most of the time he can maintain an "up". But when the "down" comes, it's unexpected and I still don't have clue about his triggers. (I know, from experience, that people with depression have triggers. I'm not sure if bi-polar is similar. Someone clear that up please?)
I can't help feeling that I've caused it, even when I know I haven't. He gets quiet and won't talk to me, and being a girl, I need talk. I don't know how to handle the "downs". Anyone out there in a similar situation got any suggestions for me?

Bipolar is characterized by up and down swings, so even though the ups may be workable, the downs are a part of the disorder. He's lived with the disorder and dealt with moods swings, so maybe him not responding is his way of not saying anything to hurt you. I sometimes get quiet and think about what I'm going to say before I say it...OR wait and calm down before I can talk rationally. He may be using these coping skills as well...and although talking it thorugh may be effective for you, remember he may not be ready to talk about things, and he's trying to manage symptoms. If he is on medications, he may want to see a MD if his symptoms are becoming more prevalent. If he's not, he may want to make an appointment so he can get some meds to help. Whatever the case, no one can CAUSE a disease...so don't feel guilty, as long as you support and understand his ordeal; you are doing the right thing.

I know what your talking about my moms ex boyfriend had it and one second he would be perfectly fine and the next he would get upset in some way but when he took medicine it would keep the downs to a minimal but once he would get off of them things could get bad maybe you should have him seek medical help for it and if he already is maybe he should re look into the meds he's taking
