6 month old puppys face swollen?

I have a 6 month old black lab. This afternoon I noticed her mouth and nose slightly swollen. Later on in the evening around 6 I noticed her whole face was swollen. I called her vet and told me to give her benadryl. I did so and it went down for about 2 hours then came back and it was worse. Now even her ears are swollen. She's still acting like her normal self. Happy, and silly. She is slightly more tired but that's it. I don't know what time the actual swelling started...I took her outside around 2 and noticed it around 4. What could have happened to my sweet puppy? She is very loved by my son and our whole family. What can I do to help her?

I work in a doggy day care and we've had this happen with a couple of dogs. The most common reason is bug bites (bees and wasps for the most part) that irritate the dog's face and blow it up like a baloon. If that's the case, I'd still notify the vet that it's gotten progressively worse, but bug bites take several days to go down all the way.

The only other reason was when one of the dogs found a plant in the yard that they were allergic to, ate it and they got really ill. That time the dog had to actually be taken to the vet.

Regardless, I'd actually take him to the vet, because the unfortunate thing is, vets are pretty complacent when you're (a) on the phone and (b) the dogs symptoms seem like something obvious to them. I had a vet tell me on the phone once that my dogs swollen ears were from food allergies- I had to bring her in before he realized she had a raging infection going on.

    Good luck!

She's most likely having an allergic reaction to a sting or bite of some sort (or ingested something). Make sure she's not having any breathing problems cos that could be life threatening. Repeat the benedryl and watch her closely. Also take warm water and wash her face in case there is some plant matter causing her reaction. The swelling should go down in a few hours...if not call your vet again.

The dosage on Benedryl can only be given every 8 hours. So do not give it again unless directed by a vet. My otc sheet says "up to 2 mg per pound, every 8 hrs".

This does sound like an allergic reaction. You need to take her to a vet if the Benedryl is not working.

You tried what the vet suggested, it did not work

Call an emergency vet and take her in ASAP

If the swelling moves to her neck and throat it could die due to cutting off her air passages

I would assume that while you were outside she had been bitten or stung by an insect. Some dogs have terrible allergic reactions same as people. And like people, dogs can die from a severe allergic reaction.

This is probably an allergic reaction to something. I would be concerned because swelling can go into the throat and close off breathing. Contact an emergency vet.

Bring her to the vet. She may have an allergic reaction to something.
