Puffer fish eating a black ghost knife fish?

I bought two puffer fish the other week, then we went to PetSmart last week end and bought a black ghost knife fish. And all the sudden the puffer fish ate his tail and his fin. Is this normal? We have seen on other websites that it is ok to have these two kinds of fish live together. So we went out and bought a 2 gallon aquarium for the puffer fish while the knife fish lives in our 44 gallon tank with everyone else. Please advise.

Ok, first off, puffers are literally some of the MEANEST fish alive. the will harass EVERY fish in the tank, and kill and eat fish bigger than they are. I made the mistake of buying a figure eight puffer without knowing anything about it. He decimated my whole tank. He even tried to eat my crab, until he grabbed it's face and pinched it really hard.

I would not suggest keeping puffers with anything besides other puffers.

Although, i must admit, they are very cool fish.....minus the whole, highly aggressive part.

And as for the knife fish, i have one as well, and it seems like they are very timid, so i'm not at all surprised that he got beat up on by the puffer.

As others have said, puffers are very very aggressive, and should only be in a species tank with other puffers. There aren't really any other fish you can put them with. And they certainly need a bigger tank than 2 gallons. Additionally they will attack anything, including each other, if you don't feed them properly, every day, and I wanted to make a note that they have a special diet that you need to consider....as juveniles they are carnivorous and need meaty foods like crickets, ghost shrimp, worms and snails...as adults they need crustaceans of all kinds, because they have very sharp and strong teeth that will easily overgrow if they aren't fed hard shelled live foods...and without proper food their teeth will grow so much that they won't be able to eat and will starve to death. I say this because you probably weren't aware of what you were getting into when you bought puffers, and if you aren't willing to get a bigger tank, probably lose some fish, and feed them an enormous and specific diet like this, then you MUST return them while you still can.

Puffers are VERY aggressive fish. I think anyone with any experience would know the Black Ghost Knife would be in danger adding it in.

By the way, a Black Ghost Knife can hit 18" - 20", it can't be kept in a 44 gallon in the long run. Also, it will not feed on flakes. It needs live, frozen, or freeze dried food, the most accepted ones being the frozen and freeze dried ones.

You need to research fish before buying them. The puffer fish are very aggressive, and many people don't have much luck with them except in species-only tanks. They are slightly messy fish, and a 10 gallon is necessary for two of them. And black ghost knife fish grow to be pretty big, and will outgrow the 44 gallon.

    Totally normal, expected even.

I'm not sure what web site told you they were compatible, but I suggest you don't visit it again.

The 2gal was a bit of a waste, even dwarf puffers will need about 10gal for 2, if they are one of the other species they will eventually need something like the 44gal, and brackish water. But the knife fish is going to need more space long term anyway as they can grow to 18" long

No, puffers are aggresive, but idk maybe you should give it a try, I loooove dwarf puffers, but they are carniveruos, if ur gonna get one buy snails so that they can eat them Best of Luck!
