DS: It's people like this that make me wish dog breeding was regulated.?

I know that there are probably hundreds of people that breed their dogs that need to be shut down. But I know of one that really comes to mind for me. I have a friend who boards her horses at this little farm. Well there are kennels there, so a guy also boards his APBT there and breeds them. He has about 10 of them and they just stay outside in kennels all day with almost no human interaction. Well, my friend also had a big white fluffy dog that lived at this farm (I believe it was a Great Pyrenees) that had free roam of the land. This guy has maybe two litters of APBT a year, and I don't understand how he's even in business because he had an entire litter that was about 6 months old living at the farm. All 8 or so of the litter attacked my friend's dog and killed it. So, I was extremely confused to later find out that not only did this guy still have all of the puppies, but he has already had two more litters! I'm pretty sure that one or two of the puppies that attacked the dog were used for breeding. Not only does he breed and produce aggressive dogs, but he's only adding to the problem of people who think pit bulls are all man hungry monsters. Gah, this makes me so angry, so I felt like sharing.

LG: Do you know anyone who is a BYB? If you don't; if you found out your friend began breeding his/her dogs irresponsibly, what would you do?

Update:

My friend isn't the one that is the problem! The guy that boards his dogs at the farm she boards horses at is! I don't think it's my place to report them. If my friend finds the need, then I will let her. I don't even fully understand the situation, since I wasn't there when the dogs attacked the other dog.

Update 2:

I don't really know if they are true American Pit Bull Terriers. I have seen them and they don't look like those hippos people call pit bulls these days. I think they let the puppies loose around the farm as well, since there was no room in the kennels for them, and they randomly just ganged up on and killed the other dog.

Update 3:

Sheri, no one was there to witness the dogs attacking it, but when the owner of the place got home, they were eating it. It was unknown until then that any of the pit bulls were aggressive. My friend is very good friends with the owner of the farm, and felt comfortable leaving her dog there. And as far as leaving the dog roam around the farm, it was a farm dog. A breed that was CREATED to watch over farms, in fact. So why in the world would they keep it locked up in the house all day when it could be out, protecting the farm. I doubt if you know much about farm dogs, since all the ones I have seen have full run of the farm. And yes, they are certain it was the puppies, they were the only ones that were out of the kennels.

Update 4:

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude. I read back over it and I do sound a bit snippy. I will admit, my friend knows a lot more about horses than dogs, but I don't think the fact that she SHOULD have known to not trust those dogs and so to keep her dog away from them makes her guilty of anything.

I have a different thought going on than the answers you received already

Let me ask ..... I can understand her boarding her horse on the farm but can you explain as to why she has her dog living there as well?

If she knew that there were aggressive dogs on the property shouldn't she have known the dangers of leaving her dog on the farm to roam freely?

Did anyone actually witness the puppies attacking her dog? Or are they just assuming it was the puppies?

Being that this is a farm couldn't it be conceivable that a wild animal could have attacked and killed her dog?

Forgetting the fact that there is an irresponsible person breeding dogs with no supervision, I can't find a logical reason why anyone would leave their dog, also unsupervised, to roam freely.

Not only does the breeder seem irresponsible but wouldn't you agree that your friend was also being irresponsible to leave her dog under such conditions?

As for reporting the incident. Whom ever witnessed the attack should be the one reporting it to animal control. If however there were no witnesses you can't blame the other dogs as it could have been any number of wild animals that could have killed her dog.

I am sorry for her loss but I have to think logically as reporting and subsequently having the possibility of dogs being euthanized needs to be substantiated with facts and not assumptions.

His breeding dogs and leaving them at the farm certainly is not ideal and is not what most of us would do. However breeders like this have always been around and will always be somewhere.

    ADD::::

Well someone has their britches in a bunch....

I do know of farm dogs .. reread what I wrote .. thank you

What I was saying was, that if she knew there were aggressive dogs on the farm then her dog should not have been roaming free.

You did not write that there was no indication of them not being aggressive until after the death of her dog. However if dogs are left on property (whether or not it is a farm or not) with little to know interaction with people, the dogs will form a pack and act like wild animals. Knowing that information should have been a warning sign to keep a closer eye on her dog.

As for the dogs eating the dog which was killed...Again, without a witness you can not be sure that the dogs killed your friends dog. It could have been wild animals and then the dogs came across the body and were eating the remain of what a wild animal had left.

There was also no reason to be rude in your response...You asked for opinions, and that is what you received. There was absolutely nothing rude or condescending in what I wrote.

  • They need to be reported to the police RIGHT NOW. People like this make me angry as hell.

Yes I do. I know the ones in the newspaper. My Aunt is one. She breeds her Yorkshire Terriers for what can be called "fun", doesn't show or work or health test her dogs.

One day, I went to a BYB. My friend was looking for a dog so we decided to go over and see with him. He had fourteen dogs, half of them were Labs and the other half were Goldens, and two litters - and if we didn't like any puppy, he had more two litters coming. The dogs couldn't go away from the kitchen and were surrounded by the woman's daughter, who held the tiny puppies away from their mother and played with them. She was dead spoiled and we ended up knowing she was only breeding because her daughter liked puppies. She didn't even knew what health testing was.

I am not sure if I understand.

Your friend boards her horses at the same place this guys boards his dogs and his dogs attacked her dog? What were the dogs doing and who let them lose? Why were they allowed to be next to each other? Was it on their own property, at the boarding place or on her land? Are you sure these are true APBTs?

Sorry for the loss of the dog. BYBs really suck sometimes, however I am not sure if you can report him for being a puppy mill. If the dogs have a place to sleep, food and water and look up to health there is nothing that can be done about the breeder.

  • Dog breeding is regulated, but they can't go around looking for people all the time. It is your place to report him. Now that you know, you're obligated to do something to prevent a future disaster. Call Animal Control and file a report. It's really a simple process and it could prevent a lot harm in the future.

A guy that lives two houses away from me breeds border collies in his back garden. He's a really nice guy but I don't really agree with what he's doing. I prefer to stay out of other peoples business, though. I always see his poor gorgeous border collie's cooped up in a tiny shed in his garden when I'm out in my garden with my dogs. On the other hand though, he does use his dogs for sheep herding but apart from that they're stuck in that tiny shed.

  • Report these people! This is a puppymill and obviously they aren't taking full responsiblilty. You need to REPORT them!

Friend or not I would report her. I see cruelty like this on Animal Cops and it makes me want to jump through my television screen, strangle the pet owner and say "You know what? Why don't we tie you up in the backyard with no food or water, let you sleep in your own feces and urine and see how you like it?"

report the dogs to animal control.

    nope

    talk to them
