Do Sai baba devotees HAVE to be hindu?

I read alot about the sai baba of shirdi and saw that nobody really knew if he himself was hindu or muslim and all his follwers were both muslims and hindus. 

now my bf is a sai baba devotee and says he follows vedic teachings....i try to ask him to explain so i understand but he always ends up arguing with me instead of explaining. then he goes on to say sai baba said this in his discourse and sai baba said that in his discourse and yet he treats me and behaves towards me opposite to the things sai baba says....yet he says he's better than me because he is hindu and i am not.

From what I gather, your boyfriend is neither a good boyfriend, Hindu, nor Sai Baba devotee.

Both Sai Baba of Shirdi and Sathya Sai Baba would be totally against the things your boyfriend has said.

I know Sai Baba devotees, they're nothing like what you're describing your boyfriend as..

EDIT: and no, Sai Baba devotees don't have to be Hindu.

The most important aspect of SaiBaba of Shirdi is "No Religion". He considered people as human beings and never discriminated on the basis of religion, caste or creed. So any one can be a follower of Shirdi Baba while continuing to profess his/her own religion. Just like Jesus, he is another one sent to this earth to direct people in the right direction.
