Are social security laws in adoptive families catching up with new family types?

I'd like to know if social security is honoring the 2nd parent when one in a relationship adopts a child and even though the other parent has been there since day one, and they've provided financial security, if they're honoring this type of relationship and providing social security benefits if the 2nd parent dies. I know that if the adoptive parent dies, leaves a will where the other one gets the child that they'd be awarded the benefits.

Update:

I'm talking about gay/lesbian couples as well as unmarried couples.

If the couple was never legally married, then social security will not recognize the relationship. Each state has its own definition of what is considered a "legal marriage" so who is, or is not, "married" will vary by state.

In most cases, gay couples or straight unmarried couples would not be recognized as being married and would therefore be ineligible for survivor benefits from social security.

Not really. Its like child trafficking within adoption. Everyone knows it wrong but they turn a blind eye to it unless its affecting them.

Money is one of main reasons why narrow minded people are against same sex marriage.

They look at it as a burden on the system and how it will affect them personally. They usually hide behind religion or religious beliefs but everything comes down to money. They aren't fooling anyone with their discriminatory ideology.

Source(s): Every tax payer should be able to allocate their portion of benefits to whomever they choose. Marriage shouldn't have anything to do with it. If they continue to be banned from doing so, then they shouldn't have to pay into it.

No I don't think so but this question would better be asked directly to SS.
