Dog being sick and eating it?

My 4 year old dog is in good health etc..but he sometimes eats his food..then throws it up (seemingly on purpose) and then eats it? Why does he do that?

He eats it, because, in his mind, there is nothing wrong with it. Dogs don't have the sense of "gross!" as we do.

It won't harm him. It usually digests better the second try.

Try smaller feedings, more often, to keep him from regurgitating.

That's just what dogs are like- my dog certainly does the same thing and eats other discusting 'stuff' too. We managed to stop him by taking him to a training class, and some techniques are very effective. I would reccomend doing this, it proves helpful for things such as walks, if your dog comes across something dirty or a dead animal or is not on a lead, it becomes easy to stop him from eating it. I think this would be a great way of dealing with your dog, after all, dogs can get tummy bugs from eating their sick, best to keep him healthy! Hope this helps, best luck!

As said before all dogs do it. If your dog is sick a lot though you should look into it. Simple things like smaller meals more often can help and also raising the feeding bowl of the ground so they don't bend over so much - you can buy stands or just sit it up on a box - this helps a lot and it actually recommended for breeds with a big chest.

My dog does exactly the same. She eats too fast. We tried various things and now have a set routine for feeding her. We add hot water to the food and leave it to cool before allowing her to eat. We say "stop" if she goes too fast. We don't let her drink straight afterwards. You can visit my blog if you want more details. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Super gross, right?!? My dog did that too. Apparently, it is an evolutionary trait. Dogs (back when they were wild) would eat his/her own feces or vomit in order to avoid giving predators a heads-up that they were in the area.

It is a common thing. Just don't let your dog kiss you after he does it ;)

My dog does NOT do that.

When he puked he sniffed it and walked off to leave me to clean it up.

I don't know whether it is because he has good food manners and left it for me to "eat" because i am boss or if it was because he isn't your average dumb dog.

I certainly wouldn't let him eat it.

If it had to come up the first time, whatever is in it can't be good.

Try and stop it, but it wont do any harm.

Wolves feed their young through regurgitation so it's not really surprising dogs do it.
