What do you think would happen if this occurred near your dojo?

Would you also give chase? Or if you are an instructor, would you tell your students to go after them?

HAHAHA! Bujinkan students save the day!

I know that my shidoshi and I would definitely take action in that kind of situation. I don't think he would tell me to, he might even tell me not to. But I would anyway.

Under those circumstances, yes, I'd intervene. To stand by and do nothing while someone is being brutally victimized is morally reprehensible.

As far as the students, I'd tell them to call the cops.

There are some who'd say you should never step in and simply call the cops. The reason that is not a good idea is because it will most likely take several minutes for the cops to arrive on scene. By that time, the victim may be dead. In many states it is actually illegal to stand by and do nothing to help the victim of a violent crime.

I would never ask my student to intervene unless they were my children. Even then it is unlikely I would ask them. You never know if the attacker is armed. The best thing would be to call the police. Knowing me I might get involved. My wife always worry when we are some place were a fight breaks out. She knows I'll be right there stopping it. If my boys are present she will gather them and make sure they are safe. Then she asks where is your dad? Before they can respond she say he is probably there breaking it up. She always tell me that I should just let the police handle it. She is right, but I still end up stopping them myself. I can recall a huge fight break out at a basketball game. I separate 7 teenage to adult women on one side of the fight and forced them out the door as the police watched. After I got the out the door I kept the other attacker from exiting the door. Once I got everyone apart then the police stepped in..lol It was at least 10 fighting the other 7.

Haha that's great! Five NINJA running screaming at would-be thieves.

I would go myself. but I would instruct my students to call the police. It's one thing to stand up to violence, and another to have liabilities for being the person in charge of a group who may have either gotten injured or injured somebody else in the altercation. Depending on the local laws of that area, there could be some massive penalties in civil court for the instructor.

However, if it's just me, I am willing to take the risk myself as I know the personal consequences.

Even though that is my personal preference, I still commend that group for helping the victim. They behaved honorably.

    That is funny.

In this case you have a clear crime taking place so I think it is only human to do something. Even if you just yell, "Hey I just called the cops" that should be sufficient. If not, I would be more inclined to get involved than not. As an instructor, I would never tell my students to go after them, but I would not tell them to stay away if I was willing to go either.

Ha ha. I remember this one school had this kid walk in and steal money from the register once. Well when he came in again to steal some more money the instructor got so pissed off, she (yes, she) chased him down the street with a katana. They never had another problem again.
