Batholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart.
Born in South Wales, he was originally an officer in the Royal Navy, but joined Howell Davis's pirate crew when his ship, HMS Princess was captured. When Davis was killed, the crew elected Roberts as captain.
He went on to capture over 400 ships.
He captured the Governor of Martiniques 52 gun fourth rate ship, hung the governor and tortured his crew to death. On another occassion he burned a slave ship, with the slaves still chained up on board.
He was active right at the end of the golden age of piracy, yet he almost brought sea trade to a stand still.
He was killed by the Royal Navy when he was hit in the throat by grape shot, after a broadside from HMS Swallow.
