Why is the government doing nothing about the "BP" oil spill? Shouldn't Obama be held accountable?
The governments duty is to protect citizens and I do not feel protected from an oil spill. Why is Obama sitting back and doing nothing while oil continues to spill in the gulf? Is he so emotionally involved in wanting to pass energy legislation that he is willing to taint the gulf to let American's believe business is bad? If Bush was in office, wouldn't media be screaming for Bush to act in the Gulf? Why isn't this pressure being placed on Obama to act? His office is the one that signs off on oil permits. If the spot leaked, why isn't his office being held accountable for this oil spill when his administration that signed off on the permit?
So the government can give money to businesses that are about to lose millions of jobs to benefit Americans, but the government won't step in to help BP clean up an environmental disaster that will devastate the fishing (and maybe tourism) industry that also brings in millions of dollars each year? How are the issues different? I was alluding to the fact that the Obama Administration IS accountable because they signed off on the permit that said it was safe for BP to drill for oil in the gulf and that everything was up to inspection. Why aren't we hearing information about the permits that were granted? Was Obama more concerned with bringing down oil prices that maybe his administrative agency that grants oil permits overlooked a few safety issues that led to the oil spill? I think its a huge statement that we aren't hearing anything in the media about the state of the original permits that allowed the drilling to take place in the first place. I think they should be made public.
I think Obama may use the oil spill as political leverage to pass energy policies like Cap and Trade. That is what I mean by his emotional involvement. Instead of protecting Americans from the fallout of the oil spill, he is doing nothing but talking to make BP look worse in the eyes of the American public to further his political agenda.
If Obama's Administration was really interested in helping, they would be helping BP speed up the process to clean up the oil well so that their plan could be done Monday and organize a back up plan so that if this new plan doesn't work, they can go ahead and shift gears to do the back up plan to stop the oil leak.

Unless they can stop this leak this week, I think we should nationalize the company and turn BP into GP: Government Petroleum. But blaming Obama is pure politics. It is an effort by the Republicans to get back at the Democrats for their criticism of Bush's response to Katrina. But they are two different things. Katrina was a natural disaster that the Federal Government has the know-how and resources to deal with. While it is true that Katrina was not Bush's fault, FEMA is a government agency whose task it is to deal with hurricanes and floods. It is their job to do so and Bush was the guy who put his buddy Brownie in charge of it. FEMA waited way to long to even respond to the disaster, which is what "Bush's Katrina" was all about. The Gulf Oil Spill is an industrial accident that the Federal Government is no way equipped to handle.

The best way to explain it is: Imagine a large apartment complex under new management, with Landlord Obama in charge. For years, the BP Fire Department has been ignoring fire hazards because the previous management, Landlord Bush, were buddies with the Fire Department and let them set their own standards. However, the fire didn't start until after Obama began collecting the rent. When the BPFD came to fight the fire, they discovered that it was just too hard to put out because their previous assurances that a fire couldn't happen were wrong, as were their assurances that if a fire did occur, they would be able to deal with it. After waiting for the BPFD to put out the fire, the tenets begin to get upset at the landlord telling him he is not doing enough.
"Why don't you fire the BPFD and take over fighting the fire yourself," Mr. FOX from apartment D demands. Landlord Obama protests that only the Fire Department has a shot at putting out the fire because they have pump trucks and hook & ladders and all the Landlord has is a garden hose. Mr. FOX knows this of course, but he has been waiting for the chance to embarrass the new Landlord since he took over and continues to scream about "Obama's Katrina" even though the two incidents are nothing alike.
When Landlord Obama criticizes the BPFD for not being able to put out the fire, some of these same tenants call him un-American for dumping on a private company and scream even louder that he is not doing enough.
This is basically the situation as it now stands. If Landlord Obama DOES kick the BPFD off the job and take over their equipment, these same tenets will scream about a management takeover. However, this is just what is needed.
What Obama has to do, if this latest effort by BP to stop the spill fails, is to Nationalize BP and put Government experts in charge, ignoring the screams of "Government Takeover" the Republicans will come up with as they did with GM, etc.. Harry Truman Nationalized the railroads in the 40's so their IS a precedent for it. I think it is close to the point when Obama must do this if, like I said, this latest attempt to stop the spill fails.
If he does show this kind of leadership and brings the disaster under control, he will only be doing his job. But of course either way the Republicans will criticize. If he continues to let BP handle the problem, they will continue to scream "Obama's Katrina." If he takes control over the crisis it will be "It's a Government Takeover! Obama is a dictator! He is Hitler!" He needs to not worry about that and do what is necessary.
Either way, it is a terrible disaster. The political posturing of the Republicans gleefully taking advantage of the tragedy to score political points only adds to the crisis.

The pressure IS being placed on the government to do something! Havnt you read/watched the news lately? Unfortunately no one seems to know what to do, frankly if you think about it, theres nothing anybody CAN do. Its going to take someone really ingenious to solve this problem, and it sure as hell wont be Obama personally. As for being emotionally involved in passing energy legislation, are you implying that he somehow blew it up himself? if you talkng about him wanting to pass the drilling bill a while ago, it was all just nonsense meant to pander to conservatives. And yes, they would be yelling at bush.
TL;DR
lol you cant hold Obama accountable for the oil spill, What do you expect? him to fix it personally?

Government officials are bureaucrats and PR people, they are not problem solvers. The solution to this gulf oil leak is going to require top technical people and creative thinking which is hindered with a bunch of politicians looking over their shoulders and asking dumb questions, trying to impress the public. Common sense clearly shows that if the solution was so simple, why would BP not implement it? Keep the polictians out of it and let the technical people do their jobs.
