How does the transfer system work?

I've been watching football for 5 years now, and I understand just about everything except the transfer system. I always hear fans fretting because a big team is courting one of their team's players, or a player has expressed interest in going to another club. Aren't they under multi-year contracts? In American sports, if a player wants to go to another team, nobody cares as long as he's under contract.

Take the situation of Fabregas with Arsenal and Barca. He still has 3 or 4 years on his Arsenal contract; if I were Arsenal (or an Arsenal fan) I couldn't care less about where Fabregas wants to be or how much Barca wants him. He's still got 3 or 4 years on his deal. At least, that's how it works in American sports, so this is why I'm asking for clarification on how transfers work.

I guess what I'm asking is, why does it matter so much what a player wants or other teams want if the player is still under contract?

well there are two transfer periods....if team A is interested in a player, he has to contact the team that ownes the player, team B. If B is willing to sell, they will name their price which may then be negotiated. If a price is agreed upon. A will be given permission to talk to the player to negotiate a salary. Assuming the player agrees, the transfer sum is paid to club B(In many cases in installments).

The transfer fee and player salaries are 2 different quantities separate from each other. The negotiated transfer fee can include: cash+player A, loan of a player from A, first refusal on a player from A, future monies depending on success of transferred player at club A. Percentage of transfer fee if player leaves A in the future.

Source(s): If B does not want to sell then A cannot even speak to the player, and the player goes nowhere. they cannot speak to a player without his clubs permission.(see tapping up...most famous probably ashley cole). A player can however talk to whomever he wants if there is 6 months or less on his contract. there is no transfer free if the length of his contract runs out. Most clubs dont keep players if they dont want to stay, but can even if the player hands in a transfer request.

Well, for the most part it's like a trade in American sports, except most of the time it doesn't involve more than one player. Instead, the player is exchanged for money, which is then used by the receiving team for whatever they want. The player then moves clubs, just like if he were traded, and is under the same contract, however, they just play for another team.

Sometimes multiple players swap teams though. This occurred with Samuel Eto'o and Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the 2009 season in Europe. Ibrahimovic left Inter Milan and Eto'o left Barcelona. They switched teams while under the same contract.

Generally, players will transfer while still under contract to ensure that they are still paid what they have been. They usually sign new contracts with the same teams in order to ensure their worth for years to come, even if they have a falling out with the team they are currently with.

1st july - 31st of august, and in the whole of january you can buy players. if fabregas was under a 4year contract his price would go up because if arsenal don't want to sell him they don't have to for 4years, although if the player wanted to go 9times out of 10 he will. because wants the point of having a player who wants to leave.

if fabregas had 0 months left on his contract and didn't sign a new one, barca could get him for free and pay his wage and arsenal couldn't do anything about it.
