By law they have to provide life saving and stabalizing treatment. But beyond that, no, they dont have to treat you, and yes, they will just send you out the door (as long as your life isnt in danger, that is).
As far as the finger incident... if you didnt have insurance, they would stitch it up, show you how to dress the stub, give you anti biotics and out the door with a multi thousand dollar hospital bill.
Why would it happen in the us?
Because the us has been living beyond its means for a very long time. People have gotten the idea that providing health care to those who cant afford it is welfare, and its not their job to pay for your health care because your lazy behind couldnt get up and go to work. We let the insurance companies act like any other for profit corporation. Because here, health care is a luxury for the rich, or given to you by public help that puts you in a position where its very difficult to get off public help and support yourself again.
What these people miss is that something like half the jobs out there dont offer insurance. What they miss while they are sitting in their nice upper middle class home is that most of us dont have insurance, and that for those who's jobs dont offer it, have to pay 2-10 times more to buy their own insurance.
Source(s): ..... I am currently on state funded insurance for a disability. half of my insurance is income based, and I will loose that half as soon as I report employment. Unfortunately, I cant even gross enough to make up for that lost half in health care, and with a history of cancer, no other company will insure me. I am sick and tired of health care being a luxury for the rich. - Anonymous1 decade ago
