Thank you for the replies.i myself have never heard of pork being bad for dogs.

I fed both the dogs in the house some ham.

My dog was fine ..no worries

my son in laws dog became ill.His mother stated pork was bad for dogs and could have killed his dog.

Ive looked up trying to find if pork was poisonous.to no avail.I do believe however that maybe the dog had an allergy to pork.

    It's absolutely fine for dogs.

For the person who cited that her dog gets sick, it's possible that your particular dog might simply have an allergy to pork , - or - simply does not possess the right enzymes to digest it.

Pork is an excellent source of protein for any dog.

As far as parasites, in North America, the pork industry is a highly regulated one. In the past , pigs were fed with waste and garbage so easily carried the trichiniasis parasite.

Nowadays, certainly pork bought from the butcher or in a store is pretty much exempt from that because this is federally inspected meat that is fed federally inspected foods.

If you buy your pork from some local farmer who isn't government regulated, then yes, you should be aware that the quality could be dangerous.

No, many dog food companies use pork and feel it is a highly digestible source of protein.

In this article, (about half way down the page, you will see "A note about feeding pork"

    http://www.katberard.com/hol_bonesandfood.htm

These people say that pork should either be cooked thoroughly or frozen for several weeks if it's to be used in a home-made or raw diet.

Other than the processed stuff (bacon, ham), pork is great. My 2 GSDs are raw fed, and they LOVE their pork roast dinners. With beef being so expensive, pork is a great way to add red meat to a raw fed dog's diet without breaking the bank. As long as you are buying from butchers or grocery stores in the US, there is little danger.

    Pork is fine for dogs.

It's not any more fatty than any other meat.

If you don't want your dog to eat the fat, simply cut it off.

In North American pork that is commercially raised there is little chance for parasites.

it is fine for dogs, food allergies and intolerance is now being rolled up together so I do think some dogs will be intolerant of it. Although I wouldn't feed a cut of meat that is high in fat to a dog (or myself).

Raw pork can contain more parasites than other meats, and it is advised that it is frozen for 3 weeks to help kill off most parasites.

Rawhide is not good to feed most dogs because it can cause an intestinal blockage if the dog does not chew it properly.

Dogs have a more senstive digestive track and do not handle sudden food changes well so if it is something new in the diet it can take a few weeks for them to adjust to it. http://www.vetinfo.com/dog-digestive-system.html

Not necessarily. There is a higher chance of American raised pork containing parasites, but deep freezing for a few weeks can help clear that risk up.

Many raw feeders feed pork, because it is cheap. However, I've known more then a few dogs who can not handle pork. It upsets their stomach. Even Zeke can not handle pork, he gets bad diarrhea. So I don't feed it to him, which is a shame, because it is very cheap.

I haven't tried Luther on pork yet, but I need to.

EDIT: Oh wow, allergy? Why didn't I think of that?

    Thank you, captain obvious....

I stated that part because I've known a LOT of raw fed dogs that can't handle pork. Something about it is more bothersome to many dogs then other meat sources.

Other than bacon I'd say yes it is. I gave my dog a piece of pork and she got terrible diarrhea, and if you notice there are no pork flavored dog food or treats and even beggin strips aren't real bacon, there's lamb, chcken, beef, venison, duck, fowl, turkey but no pork. Now I wonder why? It might be because pork isn't good for dogs.

I do occassionally treat mine to some ham. I don't give them other forms of pork. My male chihuahua once got into some pork drippings my husband spilled while bbqing. A couple days later, he was dripping blood out his bottom. It took me a few hours to figure it out, as we also have a dachshund, and my husband is accident prone, constantly bumping or banging or cutting himself somewhere. I was finding a drop of blood here, a few drops there, but couldn't tell who was doing it. I looked everybody over, my husband, the dachshund, my chihuahua. Couldn't find any injuries on any of them. Then finally I caught my male going on his piddle pad, and a scarey puddle of blood under him. Off we were to the vet. I don't mess around with internal injuries I can't figure out on my own. The first thing the vet asked me, after I told him Joey's symptoms, was had we given him any pork? I instantly said no, as I'm very careful about what "human food" I do let him have. It took me a few minutes to remember my husband bbqing the other day. The vet said he'd gotten a parasite from the pork that was tearing up his intestines and that's why he was bleeding. He had to have a round of antibiotics, some zantac, and nothing but chicken broth and water for the next few days, to let his poor tummy heal. For the most part, if you leave off the seasonings we humans so dearly love, and serve the beef, chicken, veggies to your pooch plain, and in limited quantities, it won't hurt him. Mine enjoy chicken, ham, eggs, and beef on occassion. As well as the occassional spoonful of vanilla ice cream! But other than ham, I won't give mine pork. Joey scared the crap out of me that day, I won't forget it.

No, its just like any meat, and probably in most dog foods. Also, if you've ever seen in petsmart where they sell pig ears? So yeah its fine.
