Christmas advertising?

Whether your actually an active Christian or not, most on here belong to Christian countries. As such,I believe Christmas is an important celebration and part of our culture and should be treated with some reverence.

My question is,should there be a voluntary time span between starting Christmas adverts and the actual celebration be sought from advertisers.

There's just been an advert on for Christmas catalogues and as it's still May,I think it's ridiculous. The priority these days, deems to be the making of money and the actual event is just a convenient way of doing so

Update:

Sorry Celt Paga:

Since when as 'reverence eqated to hate?

Update 2:

Jeff:

As far as I'm aware, the birth of Christ as no definitive date. We celebrate the 25th rightly or wrongly

Update 3:

Duddly Do

I find this hard to believe that you see anywhere in the question any inkling that I don't like Christmas or Christianity.

For me all the Christmas advertisements should not start until the end of October. I can understand some of the Christmas Hamper Companies having their adverts about now, as they need customers to start paying every week so that they can have hampers for Christmas but apart from that the rest should wait until October.

Yes I personally consider it annoying that Christmas advertising gets earlier and earlier and defeats the purpose of what Christmas is all about. However, in this day and age it's not going to happen as parents, no matter how hard up want toys for their children and there are some people who really aren't good at saving etc and the Christmas Catalogues are the only way they can buy early and pay for such things. I don't want to be judgemental now that my family are grown up. I can't imagine I would ever do this so early and shop in this manner but then I am out of touch with the young parents who do this. If it wasn't for most schools having some sort of nativity celebration many children only think it's Christmas because Santa Claus comes. Same has happened with all sorts of things, the origins and meanings have gone. I know of a child who made her First Communion 2 weeks ago and all she could say was "She made £800". Where is all this going to stop???

Usually it does not start until a little later, right before Halloween is here. Really, I like Christmas, but it is too much of a pain anymore. It is not what is should be celebrated as anyway. It is all about the gift, the money, who has the most lights or decorations.

We do not know when Christ was born, and that is supposed to be the reason for the season.

If you are a Christian then Christmas is a very special time of the year for remembrance and celebration. There is so much emphasis placed on the monetary gain of Christmas now that, quite frankly, it's beginning to annoy me. This past Christmas I nearly didn't put up a tree. My children are all grown up and on their own so when Christmas does come along I look at it for what it really is ... the birth of God's Son ... my Lord and Savior. When I look at it in this manner I just see the greed for the season instead of the reason for the season and it is irritating to me. That's not to say I don't enjoy the various means of celebration it just means it's sad that the meaning of Christmas is being lost. Santa Claus, in many households, has more meaning and significance than Christ himself ... so sad.

It's is a fact of life that our economy has to depend on us to spend spend and spend more.

It's up to us to look past all the commercialism.

I also get tired of the car commercials - the Viagra type commercials etc.

We get most commercials - all day - every day of the year.

I just block it all out.

We put up our tree for Thanksgiving and do it our way.. We are very frugal and have taught our family what the true meaning of Christmas is.

It's not all about the gifts and not - just about Santa.

We should all be thankful that we have freedom to practice our own beliefs and keep our culture alive.

We should all be kind and giving people and help our fellowman - no matter what we believe in.

Hope I didn't stray too far from the point of your question.

    Good question.

Sorry that you do not like Christmas - you do not seem to like Christianity either. I do not care what you like, or what you believe in, but leave me to make my own choice no matter what it may be. P.S. I am Mrs. Santa Claus, and I believe in the birth of Christ. Now I am going to enjoy the laughter, the excitement of Christmas, and enjoy giving presents to everyone that I know - and I just may do it ALL year. In addition, I plan on going to church any time I want to. No matter how many people would like to change it.

Even the people who enjoy Christmas are burnt out before it gets here. Have heard them complain. Last year one discount store, Ross, was playing very soft instrumental Christmas music in October. Trying to be subtle and subliminal at the same time. Seems like most of the holidays are spaced enough to keep the money flowing to the corporations and they are competing with each other too much.

Our family celebrates the holidays--any holiday--as we see fit. We do what pleases us and don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it.

Retail marketers are going to do what they need to do to meet their financial goals.

I can allow myself to be sucked into ad campaigns or not. It's my choice.

I haven't seen advertisements for Christmas catalogs, but then this time of year I'm paying attention to whether or not I've got enough canning jars for my pickles and salsa. Tomato season is just around the corner.

yes,one tires of xmas when all the stores have xmas adverts/items displayed in august.and when xmas carols are played 24/7 in coffee shops from oct 1-b4 halloween! i worked in a coffee shop that did that-starting oct 1,we were told to play only xmas music all day.on dec 26,we took the tape out and tossed it in the trash bin.its sad that such over-exposure makes one look forward with dread to this sacred holiday.i remember when the stores used to officially begin playing xmas music-it was 2 weeks b4 dec. 25th.

There is usually "Christmas in July" sales every year. Also, this is the time of the year to start collecting craft supplies to start craft projects that need to be completed before the holidays. You didn't mention what catalog the advert was for.
