Question about installing a new OS?
My computer runs vista but it will not load to the desktop anymore. It says it needs a boot disk which I don't remember getting with my laptop when I bought it. Anyway, I just bought a Windows 7 installation disk from staples (full version) and have been trying to install it and am having a problem getting it to finish installing.
The first time I tried to install it, it gives you the option to do the upgrade version but since I cannot get the computer to get to the desktop it said I cannot do the upgrade. So I decided to try to install it the custom way. I have tried it twice but it gave me an error saying that it would have to install it on windows.old and it may cause my hard drive to fail and it wouldn't finish installing it. I decided to try again only this time I was just going to format it first before installing it. I do have pictures on the computer but I believe most of them I have backed up.
Anyway, when I went to install it the last time it goes through the select language screen and keyboard type, then it goes to where you hit install now after that it just says setup is starting and I cannot get it to come off of that screen anymore like the other times. So it will not let me get to where I can format or choose which installation I want anymore. Do you know what could cause it to not get past the setup is starting screen? It did before and now that I have decided to just do the format it won't let me even get to the choose which installation screen anymore.
It will not go to the desktop at all. That is why it is asking for an installation disk. So we cannot go to safe mode.

First try to start your computer without the setup disk in .. i belive it will take you to a continue or cancle screen ... what happened to your old partition with vista on it? If it is still there when your computer comes on try to go into BIOS and setting that to boot and get into it with safe mode .. vista should boot in safe mode. after your in, look in my computer and see if their is a seperate partition setup for windows 7.(it wont say windows 7, but it will have likely created a seperate partition that looks to be a strage size(if it got that far), then just format/delete that)
